United States suffered the worst start of 2021 when a group of Trump supporters violently invaded the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. As a result of incumbent President Donald Trump’s false claims of electoral fraud in the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to Joe Biden, a mob of insurrectionist rioters broke into the US Capitol. The joint session of Congress certifying the election of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was on proceedings on that day.

During the break-in, Vice President Mike Pence, members of Congress, and staff present there were rushed out in an emergency evacuation. The incident where the rioters held The Capitol for several hours resulted in the death of four rioters and one Capitol Police officer. Another police officer who was on duty during the siege committed suicide on Saturday. The event is defined as one of the worst incidents in US history. The last time the US Capitol was overrun with hostile intent was during the 1814 Burning of Washington by the British during the War of 1812. The incident has been variously described as treason, insurrection, domestic terrorism, and an attempt by Trump to carry out a self-coup.

It took over three hours for police to retake control of the Capitol. One of the US Capitol police, Eugene Goodman emerged as a hero after he single-handedly deviated the protestors from the Capitol. Goodman was praised for his bravery in controlling the mob. 

In video footage shot by Huffington Post reporter Igor Bobic, Goodman is seen confronting a group of protestors at the door who were trying to enter the Senate chambers. Goodman’s action to halt the mob gave the security authorities enough time to lock the Senate chambers. The video footage went viral on social media.

Eugene Goodman showed bravery against the rioters who tried to enter the Senator floor during the US Capitol invasion. Goodman’s action has been praised by several congressmen, politicians, law enforcement officials, and citizens. Some Congressmen called for Goodman to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor as well.
