After Salaam was chosen by the Chicago Bears in the first round, together with the 21st overall choice of the 1995 NFL Draft, he played to the group from 1995 to 1997. Throughout his early phase, he hurried for 1,074 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. But, because of accidents, fumbles and chemical abuse, he spent just 3 years with the Bears. Consequently, he was traded to the Miami Dolphins before the 1998 season, a commerce that was reversed after Salaam failed a physical exam. Another effort at an NFL career in 2002 also proved abortive for Salaam after having a much-publicized training in the Cris Carter Speed School. After all of the hype, he had been picked up from the San Francisco 49ers in 2003 but in August the exact same year, he was then let go from the second-to-last round of cuts. Likewise, Salaam was signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 2004 but had been suspended from the Argos in May. This marked the conclusion of his profession.
