Early Life and Family

Darrel Sheets was born on 13 May 1958, in California, USA. His family moved to Covina, which is in Los Angeles County in California. The move was not exactly a huge one, and would end up serving him well, “Storage Wars” being located in California. He has not shared a lot about his childhood, but as one may suspect, he was already an avid treasure hunter as a young child. He has been incredibly lucky and innovative in transforming his childhood hobbies into a rewarding career.

Education

As there is no official training for being an auctioneer and treasure hunter, it can be assumed that Sheets achieved his prowess in the industry through experience and practice.

He has been involved in the industry for so long that he’s probably had his fair share of failures, but which have served as stepping stones to his success.

Career

Auctioneer

Darrell Sheets first discovered his fascination with abandoned storage spaces when he was in his early 20’s. In California, the law states that if a storage space is three months behind in rent, then the contents can be auctioned off. This is a little more of a gamble than it first appears – firstly, the entire contents of the storage space are auctioned off together, so no, you cannot take the paintings and leave the pincushions. Secondly, potential bidders are not given much time – five minutes  – or the best vantage point – from the doorway – to peruse the contents of the storage space, then the auction commences.

The entire process requires you to not only be savvy but willing to take the risks that may simply result in you losing a couple of thousand dollars, and getting you no more than a collection of old junk. During this time, Sheets made some incredible discoveries, including four paintings by Pablo Picasso (an analytic cubism artist from Spain), an original letter from Abraham Lincoln, and a comic book collection that sold for an incredible amount. The industry is not always upbeat, however, and in 1988 Darrell found possibly the most disturbing item in his entire career: a human corpse, later determined to be that of a woman who had been murdered by her husband, wrapped in plastic and abandoned in the storage unit.

It is also not unheard of to uncover cremation urns in the units.

“Storage Wars”

His prolific success becoming somewhat famous in treasure hunter circles, Darrell Sheets was invited to participate as the main star in the A&E Network’s new show “Storage Wars”. The series would follow the careers of storage space bidders like himself, cataloging their discoveries and earning them international recognition. The show premiered in 2010, by which point Sheets had been active in the industry for thirty years. Sheets become a popular figure in the show, building viewer affection through his eccentric mannerisms and endearing tendency towards malapropisms.

One of his most impressive finds was a collection of art by Mexican artist, Frank Gutierrez, that was valued at the surprising total of $300,000. In comparison to the payload he found in that storage locker, he paid only the meager sum of $3,600. For a time, his son Brandon Sheets appeared as his partner in the series but was eventually removed from the cast after the show had to undergo a series of budget cuts.

Personal Life

Marriage and Relationship

Darrell Sheets has been involved in various relationships, as well as a failed marriage. Sheets’ first marriage was to a woman whose name has not been disclosed, but they had two children together, one of which is Brandon Sheets. The two divorced and moved on in life.

In 2012, Darrell was driving in California when he spied a gorgeous girl in an adjacent lane through her car window. The two exchanged glances, which may not have developed to anything more had Sheets not written down his number and held it up to his window. The girl, who turned out to be the realtor Kimber Wuerfel, called him up and the two started dating. Darrell is even rumored to have adopted her two children, and has stated that between the two of them, they have four grandchildren. However, the relationship did not last and Sheets and Wuerfel separated in 2016.

In December of that same year, Darrell announced his engagement to Romney Snyder, leaving some to speculate that the two had been having an affair, and this is what ruined his relationship with Kimber.

Romney Snyder worked at HiCaliber Horse Rescue, an organization that saves horses from cruel owners and slaughter auctions. In an ironic twist of fate, the rescue organization has been under investigation since 2018 for fraud, improper veterinary practices, and for the very animal cruelty that they claim to abhor.

Weight Loss

The familiar reality show figure underwent an impressive transformation in 2014. After undergoing a minor heart pains after almost three months of feeling ill, Sheets realized that he needed to take drastic action and combat his health issues. With the support of his then partner, Kimber, Darrell enlisted in Nutrisystem, a healthy eating and dieting regime. He also began to work out, and integrated an exercise routine into his everyday life.

Sheets subsequently lost a whopping 118lbs (53kgs), and now boasts a completely new physique. Sheets explained that he could physically feel the toll his unhealthy lifestyle was having on him, “My joints hurt. My body hurt.” and “I had to get away from eating cheeseburgers and making bad decisions on set.”

Appearance

Darrell Sheets is 5ft 10ins (1.77m) and due to his recent weight transformation, weighs only 197lbs (90kgs), an impressive improvement on his previous 315lbs (143kg)s. Sheets features various tattoos on both upper arms. He has an orangey-white mustache and beard, and appears to have blue eyes, and hair that is slightly carrot in color.

Net Worth and Salary

Although he is no longer involved in the auction and bidding industry, he had already built himself quite a substantial fortune. Supplementing this was his income from the show “Storage Wars”, which purportedly can to an impressive $25,000. As previously mentioned, he has made large amounts on different treasures throughout his career – he discovered an art collection valued at $300 000, and an original letter from Abraham Lincoln, which sold for $15 000. This does not even account for other gems he found, such as Picasso paintings and the comic book collection that sold for $90 000. His current net worth is estimated to be as much as $6 million.
