Ric Ocasek was an American musician, record producer, writer, and actor. He came to the public notice for being the founding member of the rock band The Cars. The band also consists of other members like Benjamin O’Rourke (lead vocalist), Elliot Easton (lead guitar), David Robinson ( drummer), and Greg Hawks (Saxophone).

He had also made a cameo as a beatnik painter in the John Waters film Hairspray and as a mechanic in the film Made in Heaven. He even made appearances on a few talk shows including The Colbert Report hosted by Stephen Colbert. The record producer was born on 23 March 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland, the United States of America, under the star sign, Aries. His parents moved to Cleveland, Ohio when he was 16 years. There his father worked as a systems analyst with NASA at the Lewis Research Center. He had the nationality of American and belongs to the white caucasian ethnicity.

Regarding his education, he attended Maple Heights High School and graduated in 1963. Following that, he joined Antioch College as well as Bowling Green State University, however, he later dropped out of the college to pursue his dream career. He started his musical journey after associating with a band the Grasshoppers on the local musical variety program Big 5 Show. In 1968, he and his future band member Cars bassist Benjamin Orr began to perform in and around Ohio State University.

The duo moved to Boston in the early 1970s and later formed a folk-rock band Milkwood. They released one album How’s the Weather under the Paramount Records in early 1973 but didn’t reach the chart. In 1978, he became a founding member of the band The Cars formed along with bassist Orr, Drummer David Robinson, Lead guitarist Elliot Easton, and Saxophone Greg Hawks. The band had recorded several hit songs until 1988.

In 1982, he recorded his first solo album of the Cars’ new wave rock sound where Ocasek played all of the instruments. After being disappeared from the media following the disbanding of The Cars, he came out in 1990 with his own album Fireball Zone. For the next decades, he released many solo works including the 1997’s Billy Corgan-produced Troublizing. As a record producer, his production credits Weezer’s Blue Album, the Wannadies, Jonathan Richman, and The Cribs.

Talking about his relationship, he had married three times during his lifetime. But no information about his extra-marital affairs. He had his first marriage with his wife Constance whom he divorced in Ohio in 1971. Moreover, he married for the second time in the same year his second wife Suzanne Ocasek. The duo married for 17 years divorcing in 1988.

Additionally, he later married his third wife Paulina Porizkova, a supermodel, on 23 August 1989. Moreover, he met Paulina when she was 18 years old in 1984 while he was married to Suzanne during the filming of the music video for the Cars’ song “Drive”. Further, Ric and Paulina’s wedding was held at Saint-Barthélemy island and welcomed two children: Jonathan Raven (b. 1993) and Oliver (b. 1999).

Paulina later announced in May 2018 that he had split from the late singer in July 2017 almost after their 30 years of togetherness. During the time of his demise, the duo was going through a divorce. However, he also fathered four more children from his previous two marriages. His eldest son Christopher is a singer and acted in the film Pretty Woman (1990). His other three sons are Adam (b. 1970), Eron (b. 1973), and Derek (b. 1981).

Death:

He was found dead by his wife Paulina Porizkova on 15 September 2019 at his New York City townhouse. At the time, they were going through their divorce process. According to the autopsy, he had suffered from both hypertensive heart and coronary artery disease and the cause of his death was natural.

At the time of his death, he reported having an estimated net worth of above $5 million. His most of income came from his career as a musician and music producer. Furthermore, his wife Paulina had a legal dispute regarding her share in the late musician’s wealth.
