The veteran journalist has only available very little information on her personal life or early life. She was born as the daughter to the native American parents Ron and Luanne Smith. She was born during the year 1958 which makes her age around 62. It seems that she is a single child of her parents since there is no information on her siblings.

Regarding her education, after completing high school, she joined the University of Nebraska. She attended the university from 1976-1981 and majored in journalism and political science. From a young age, she had enthusiastic about reporting and anchoring.
