Cillian is also a native of Ireland, where both of his parents worked in academe, his father being in the Irish Department of Education. With many of his family members involved in that sector, it seemed that he was inclined to follow, but things drastically changed as he grew up. He became fond of songwriting and playing music at a young age, often engaging in these activities with his siblings.

He attended the Presentation Brothers College where he often got into trouble,  realizing that there wasn’t a good creative outlet in his school, but he did become interested in acting due to a drama course that was offered.

He set his sights on a career in the entertainment industry, and began his foray with music, working in several bands with his brother. This eventually led them to be offered a five-album deal by Acid Jazz records, but they opted not to sign due to his brother still being in high school. Cillian later admitted that this was a good move, as he realized signing your life to a label wasn’t a good idea.

Transition to Acting – Cillian Murphy

After completing a bachelor’s degree, he enrolled at the University College Cork to study for a law degree, but eventually flunked because of his disinterest. Acting became more than just an interest at the time, as he began to go to theatrical productions.

In 2005, he was cast in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” playing the role of Dr. Jonathan Crane, who is also the supervillain Scarecrow. His audition for Batman so impressed Nolan that he was included in the cast.

He continued to reprise his role in successive films of Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

In 2005, he continued to gain acclaim for his work as a transgender woman in the film “Breakfast on Pluto”. Five years later he worked with Nolan once more, playing the role of Robert Fischer in “Inception”. His next big project was the television series “Peaky Blinders”, a period show set in Birmingham after World War I, following a criminal gang during this period, and again attracting acclaim for his performance. One of his latest projects is the Nolan film “Dunkirk” in which he plays an army officer – he agreed to take on an unnamed role, as he felt that it was a very real experience of many soldiers during the war.

Personal Life

In 1996 Yvonne met Cillian during one of his band shows, and they started a relationship, they were together for eight years before deciding to marry. They have two children together, and lived in London for a long time before moving back to Dublin in 2015. The couple prefers to live far away from the entertainment industry, citing no desire to move to Hollywood as they prefer to keep their lives private. She doesn’t join him to red carpet events, and Cillian is often the type of guy who doesn’t get too involved with the celebrity scene, only having actor friends who are also of Irish descent.
