Eliza was raised an only child in Los Angeles by her father David Rayfiel who was a writer, known for having worked on the mystery thriller movie “Three Days of the Condor” and the romantic comedy “Sabrina”, and her mother Lila Garrett, who was a film screenwriter, producer and director, perhaps still known for her works on the romantic comedy “The Other Woman”, and the action adventure comedy “Get Smart”.

Eliza became interested in acting thanks to her parents, who often took her on sets of their movies and TV series, and she began appearing in theatre plays while still attending high school. Upon matriculation in 1971, Eliza enrolled at college, but quit two years later to focus on her acting career.

Roles in movies

Eliza has been credited with over 80 appearances in movies and TV series, and we are going to mention some of her most notable performances in this article.

She made her debut film appearance in 1973 when she portrayed Mindy Binerman in the science fiction horror comedy “Schlock”, which was both written and directed by John Landis who also starred in the movie, and in 1977 she portrayed Beth Loomis in the drama “Terraces”, written and directed by her mother Lila.

The year 1978 saw her play Brunella, one of the lead characters in the comedy “National Lampoon’s Animal House”, and a few of Eliza’s following roles were in the drama “Obsessed with a Married Woman” in 1985, the drama “Crack Me Up” in 1991 and the crime mystery drama “Love Is a Gun” in 1994. In 1995, she played Josselyn in the romantic comedy drama “Kicking and Screaming”, both written and directed by Noah Baumbach, while the following year saw her play a supporting character in the science fiction drama “Past Perfect”, which starred her husband Eric.

In 2001, Eliza was cast in the action thriller “Rough Air: Danger on Flight 534”, which once again starred her husband, and in 2005 she appeared in James Becket’s family movie “Final Approach”, but which received mixed reviews.

The year 2010 saw Eliza star alongside her husband in Bryan Michael Stoller’s family comedy drama “First Dog”, and a few of her following roles were in the Henry Jaglom comedy drama “Queen of the Lot” in 2010, the action fantasy “Revelation Road 2: The Sea of Glass and Fire” in 2013, and the short thriller drama “Scenes from Powned” in 2014.

Three of Eliza’s most recent roles in movies have been in the comedy “Six Weeks to Twelve Years” written and directed by Christopher Nicastro, the drama “My Brothers’ Crossing” and the romantic film “Stan the Man” all released in 2020. Eliza made her debut TV series appearance in 1976, when she guest starred as The Receptionist in the episode “The Unemployment Story: Part 2” of the comedy series “All in the Family”, while the following years saw her appear in an episode or two of many series, such as the comedy “Baby… I’m Back!” in 1977, the comedy “Gimme a Break!” in 1982 and the comedy drama “St. Elsewhere” in 1986.

She gained recognition in 1994 after guest starring as Lara in the episode “Foundling” of the adventure comedy drama “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”, then as she decided to focus on movie roles rather than in TV series, Eliza has appeared in only three other series to this day: she portrayed Lilith Matthews in the episode “Crisis” of the drama “Minutes After Midnight” in 2015, appeared as Ivanna Moss in the episodes “Moving On” and “Law of Attraction” of the mini-series “Class Act”, and as Aunt Reba in the episode “Familiar Faces” of the drama “Scrutiny”, all in 2019.

Career as a casting director

Eliza served as the casting director for nine episodes of the series “Baby… I’m Back” in 1978, as well as for 23 episodes of the comedy series “You Again?” in 1987. She worked on the comedy film “Who Gets the Friends” in 1988, and was then invited to serve as the casting director for 39 episodes of 48 created for the comedy series “Throb”.

She worked on the movies “Circus” and “9 ½ Ninjas!” in 1988 and 1991 respectively, before being invited to work on 15 episodes of the drama series “Midnight Caller” in 1991, and eight episodes of the drama series “I’ll Fly Away” in 1992. Three of her most recent works have been on the movies “Breaking the Rules” in 1992, “Luck of the Draw” in 2000 and “The Wayshower” in 2011.

Love life and marriage with Eric Roberts

Eliza married her first husband, American film producer and director James Simons in the early ‘80s – the two have kept the exact date of their wedding a secret, as well as that of their divorce, however, it is believed that they were married for three years. During that time, Eliza gave birth to their two children, Morgan Simons who is today a casting director, and Keaton Simons who is an actor and a musician.

He has won 33 awards for his performances in movies, and been nominated for 17 others, including an Oscar and three Golden Globes.

Eric was arrested in 1987 for drug possession, as he had marijuana and cocaine on him and also resisted arrest, and tried to assault a police officer – he spent a day and a half behind bars, pleaded guilty to harassment, while the other charges were eventually dropped. He was arrested once again in February 1995 after shoving Eliza into a wall, and then swore he would stop using drugs.
