Melissa is of multi-racial descent, and she grew up in New York. She attended the private Archbishop Molloy High School. She didn’t have a clear direction for her career at a young age, but after matriculating, she enrolled at St. John’s University where she would eventually meet her future husband J. Cole.

For a time he worked numerous odd jobs including as a mascot and a newspaper salesman.

He kept various song samples with him, and also had a notebook that contained songs he wrote over the years.

After creating a full- CDs-worth of work, he traveled to Roc the Mic Studio, hoping to catch the attention of rapper Jay Z.
