Born William James Nesbitt on the 15th January 1965, in Ballymena, County Antrim Northern Ireland, United Kingdom; he is the son of James ‘Jim’ Nesbitt, the headmaster of the primary school he attended, and his wife May Nesbitt, who was a civil servant. The youngest of four and the only son, his three sisters Margaret, Kathryn, and Andrea are all now teachers. Growing up he spent so much time alone, playing with a ball, desiring to become a professional soccer player for Manchester United, or a teacher, following his father’s footsteps.
The family moved to Coleraine, County Londonderry, as his mother got a job with the Housing Executive. He attended Coleraine Academical Institution (CAI), and later studied acting at Central School of Speech and Drama (CSSD), moving to London, England at just 18 years old, and graduated from the university four years later.
Career Beginnings
James had made his acting debut at just 13 years of age; his parents decided to take him on an audition to Riverside Theater for its Christmas production of “Oliver!”, and after singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” at the audition, he was cast as the Artful Dodger.
For the next three years he worked with Riverside Theatre, and received the Equity card when he performed as Jiminy Cricket in “Pinocchio”; he was lucky to get the role, as the actor originally selected broke his ankle just two days before the performance. He continued with stage roles, playing Brad Majors in the play “The Rocky Horror Show” then appearing in “Godspell” as Jesus, both in 1983, while in 1987 he was Keith in the play “Up on the Roof”. Four years later he secured his first starring role, as Tony in the romantic-drama film “Go Now”, next to Robert Carlyle and Juliet Aubrey. Personal Life and Net Worth
James and Peggy’s mother met for the first time in 1989, and soon after began dating. However, in 1991 they broke up following the release of the film “Hear My Song”, but then in 1994 started dating once again, and married the same year. In 2013 James announced their split, and in 2016 they officially divorced. Since then, he hasn’t had any affairs, in public anyway.
He is dedicated to several charities, including Wave, which supports those who have been affected by the Troubles, the Ethno-nationalistic conflict in Northern Ireland. Furthermore, he is also the UNICEF UK ambassador, among other positions.
In the 2016 New Year Honours List, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contribution to drama, and the community in Northern Ireland.
