Early life and education
Mary was raised alongside her younger brother Luke by their father John Gerard Padian, who is the owner of a plant in which metal is recycled, and their mother Teresa Ann Padian, who is in the real estate business. John is of Irish descent while Teresa is from Lebanon – they divorced in 2009.
Mary grew up being interested in writing stories and articles, and it was in high school that she joined a journalist club and at the age of 18 started working as an intern for “D Magazine”. Upon matriculation, she enrolled at the University of Texas, Austin graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in photo-journalism in 2002.
Career as a journalist and a TV personality
Mary launched her career in 2003, when she started working as an assistant editor for the magazine “Architectural Digest” in New York City – it published its first issue in 1920, and is focused on articles related to landscaping and interior design.
Mary had her own section in the magazine in which she wrote about the unique things which she bought for her house, and which were very cheap, and she also created “Mary’s Finds Video Blog” to show these items to the public. After Mary’s close friend and mentor, Paige Rense decided to quit “Architectural Digest” in 2010, Mary felt all alone, and decided to move back to Dallas.
In 2011 Mary opened an antique shop called “Mary’s Finds”, and soon met Moe Prigoff, who has been selling her antiques for years now.
It was Moe who told Mary about the storage unit auctions, and she bought and sold numbers of them before she was invited to appear in the series “Storage Wars”.
Moe also appeared in “Storage Wars” in its first three seasons, and is the owner of his own antique store “River Regency Modern”. He is easily recognized by his unique clothes, but his wife isn’t that happy with his career, because Moe has been piling up the things he hasn’t sold over the years in their backyard.
