Childhood and education

Alex was raised in Los Angeles by Whoopi and her first husband Alex’s father Alvin Martin, to whom she was married from 1973 to 1979, when they divorced for unknown reasons.

After her mother married director and cinematographer David Claessen in 1986, he took great care of both of them, but he and Whoopi still divorced in 1988. In 1994 after Alex had already moved out, Whoopi married Lyle Trachtenberg but the marriage lasted for only a year.

Alex was motivated by her mother to launch her acting career, and Whoopi also helped her win her first roles. She attended a local high school at which she played soccer and ran track – she was encouraged by her family and teachers to pursue a career as a model, so after matriculation in 1991, Alex chose to focus on her acting career, rather than to pursue a college degree.

Career as an actress and film producer

Alex made her debut film appearance (uncredited) in 1985, when she played The Little Girl in the drama “The Color Purple”, written by Menno Meyjes and Alice Walker, directed by Steven Spielberg, and which starred Danny Glover, Whoopi and Oprah Winfrey – the story follows a black woman who is finally free after being abused by her father and other men for more than 40 years. The movie was a huge success, winning 14 awards while it was nominated for 23 others, including 11 Oscars.

In 1993, Alex played Mannerjay’s Scribe in the action adventure comedy movie “Quest of the Delta Knights”, but which received poor reviews, then in the same year,she played The Classroom Kid in the family comedy movie “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit”, which starred her mother in the role of a showgirl who dresses up as Sister Mary Clarence, and starts teaching Catholic students music. 1994 saw Alex become Miss Golden Globe during the 1994 Golden Globe Awards.

Three of Alex’s other appearances have been in the 1999 comedy film “American Intellectuals” in which she played Hugh, the 2001 family comedy movie “Call Me Claus” which starred her mother, and the 2003 thriller drama film “Strange as Angels” written and directed by Francisco Roel.

Alex has also produced two films: the 2008 short animated drama “Descendants” and the 2018 short comedy “Sensitive Men”.

Love life and boyfriend

She went on to marry film producer Bernard Dean, and give birth to their daughter Jerzey in 1995 as well as to their son Mason in 1998. Whoopi was raised by her mother Emma Johnson who was a teacher and a nurse, as her father Robert James Johnson Jr. who was a Baptist clergyman abandoned the family for unknown reasons. Whoopi studied at St Columba’s before transferring to Washington Irving High School, from which she dropped out. She moved to Berkeley, California in the mid-‘70s, and there worked multiple jobs to financially support herself, while she was also a member of the theatre troupe – Blake Street Hawkeyes.

She has recently been fighting sepsis and pneumonia, which was the cause of her short absence from her show “The View”, which she has been hosting since 4 September 2007.
