He broke his neck when he was still a baby, and had to wear a head brace which left scars on his forehead. Kayden was raised by his maternal grandmother; he dropped out of high school before finishing his junior year. He was arrested for robbery at the age of 15 and spent some time in a detention center located in Tallulah in Louisiana, where he started writing the lyrics of his songs.

His grandmother died of heart failure while he was incarcerated, and Kayden thus invited his friend rapper OG 3Three to live with him – the two engaged in illegal activities to pay to record their songs in a studio.

YoungBoy was arrested again in December 2016 in Austin, Texas, after what appeared to be attempted first-degree murder – he got to spend some time in a prison in East Baton Rouge Parish in Louisiana, and while there his two mixtapes came out entitled “Mind of a Menace 3: Reloaded” and “Before I Go: Reloaded”.
