Early life and education

Tom was raised alongside his two brother James and Dave Franco in Palo Alto, by their father Douglas Eugene Franco who was running a business in Silicon Valley, and their mother Betsy Lou who was a writer and an actress.

Both James and Dave have become famous actors – James is popular for his roles in movies such as “Spider-Man”, “Flyboys”, and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”.

Tom attended Palo Alto High School where he became interested in acting as well as other forms of art such as writing and painting, and after matriculation in 1998, he enrolled at the University of California, Santa Cruz and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2002. He continued his education at California College of the Arts located in Oakland, from which he obtained his Master’s degree in ceramics.

Career as an actor

Tom actually launched his acting career in 1990, when he portrayed Frog Boy in the comedy horror movie “Basket Case 2”, which was both directed and written by Frank Henenlotter, and starred Kevin Van Hentenryck, Judy Grafe and Annie Ross. The movie is about two brothers, one of whom is a mutant bound in a basket, and who are taken in by a secret society which is keeping them hidden from the journalists following them. The movie received mixed reviews.

Partly because of his education commitments, it was 15 years before Tom had his next role, in “A Peace of History” in 2005, before he was invited to star as Bernie in the five-minute long comedy film “The Devil Wears a Toupee”, which also starred Justin Minto and Bobby Reed, and which was written and directed by Josh Monkarsh. In 2011, Tom made an uncredited appearance as Mounted Officer in the science fiction action drama “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”, which starred his brother James, Andy Serkis and Freda Pinto and is about an ape who, after being injected with a substance to fix its brain, becomes intelligent and leads other apes against humans.

The movie won 21 awards and was nominated for 43 others, including an Oscar. He made another uncredited appearance in 2012 when he portrayed an Archie’s Thug in the crime drama film “Spring Breakers”, which starred Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez and Ashley Benson, and which is about four girls who are running a restaurant to gather enough money to go on a spring vacation, however, after being arrested for partying and taking drugs, they are bailed out by a drug dealer. The year 2013 saw Tom appear in the TV special “Roast of James Franco: Red Carpet Pre-Show”, which was hosted by Tom and James’ grandmother Mitzie Verne and the comedian Jonah Ray – Tom also made an uncredited appearance in the TV special “Comedy Central Roast of James Franco”. In 2017, Tom portrayed Mr. Z. in the family drama film “Metamorphosis: Junior Year” which starred Arash Afrakhteh, Noa Amzallag and Ari Atken, and which is about a young man Ovid who finds comfort in mythology and art after his sister disappears without a trace.

He portrayed Karl in the same year in the biographical comedy drama movie “The Disaster Artist”, which starred his brothers James and Dave as well as Ari Graynor, and which is about two men Greg Sestero and Tommy Wiseau who meet at an acting school and then decide to go to Hollywood together. The movie was a huge success, winning 31 awards and being nominated for 82 others, including an Oscar.

Two of Tom’s latest appearances have been in the documentary film “Harumi”, about Harumi Taniguchi who is today 97 years old and who has spent her life painting and writing poetry, and in “The Field Trip” episode of the animated TV series “Action Nat and the Cat”, in which he portrayed Mr. Franco.

The series is new as it has aired only two episodes, and stars Becca Brown, Thea Camara, and Danny Froze.

Love life and relationships

Tom met his first wife Julia Lazar while he was shooting for the short film “A Peace of History” in 2004, and they spent several months working closely together before going out on their first date. They spent nearly 10 years together before Julia was hospitalized because of kidney and liver failure caused by liver cancer and hepatitis C – Tom married her in a hospital solarium just a month before she died.

Tom met Iris Torres, a film producer and assistant director, in 2011 during the shooting for the film “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and they became good friends.

Not long after Julia died, the two went out on a date, and just a year later they married in a small ceremony attended by their closest friends and family. They are currently living at their home in Los Angeles, California.

Hobbies and other interests

Tom is an artist who is mostly interested in modern artwork in several disciplines, including painting, and is credited with the founding of the Firehouse Art Collective in Berkeley, California, and many of his own paintings can be seen at the gallery. He likes to travel, and has been all around the US for both work and pleasure – his favorite city is Miami in Florida.
