Born Pierre Olivier Sarkozy on the 26th May 1969, in Paris, France to Pal Sarkozy de Nagy-Bocsa, and his wife Christine de Ganay. His father is a Hungarian nobleman of lesser nobility, while his mother is of French ancestry. Before Christine, his father was married and had three children, one of whom is the former France President Nicolas Sarkozy, who governed France from 2007 to 2012, which makes him Olivier’s half-brother.

Unfortunately, Olivier’s parents divorced when he was seven years old, and he went on to live in several countries, including Egypt, Zambia and attended a boarding school in the UK. Following high school, he enrolled at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, from which he eventually obtained an M.A. in medieval history.

Olivier’s career began in the early ‘90s when he was recruited by Dillon, Read & Co, an investment bank based in the USA. He spent the next three years there, before moving on to join Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB), where he was the managing director in the Financial Institutions Group.

Also, he was the adviser on Wachovia’s merger of equals with First Union, and worked on several other mergers, including between Wells Fargo and Norwest Corporation, while also the acquisition of First Interstate, among others.

In early 2003 he became the Global Co-Head of the Financial Institutions Group at UBS Investment Bank, for which one of his major works was the recapitalization of Sallie Mae’s $3 billion, and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce’s $2.9 billion recapitalization. Furthermore, he was the lead advisor on several transactions notable for the world economy.

From UBS he moved to The Carlyle Group LP as a co-head and managing director in 2008. Eight years later he resigned from the position and since 2016 Olivier has been on the Board of Directors of BankUnited.
