Diana was raised an only child in the Greater Los Angeles Area, by her father Filberto Rivero who was a musician from Cuba, and her mother Judy Canova who was a famous American actress, singer and radio personality – she has a half-sister, Tweeny Canova from her mother’s previous marriage to Chester B. England.

Diana attended Hollywood High School at which she became interested in acting, and appeared in several plays performed at the school. She also appeared in multiple plays at a local theatre, where she practiced her acting skills nearly every day. Upon matriculation in 1971, Diana enrolled at Los Angeles City College, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre in 1974.

Diana dated the late American actor and comedian Steven Landesberg in the early ‘70s, while they were both still working their way up in the film industry – they were together for around one year before splitting for unknown reasons. In 1974, she met Geoff Levin, an American rock musician and a songwriter, who is perhaps still best known for having founded and served as the lead singer of the band ‘People!’ They dated for two years before marrying in a private ceremony attended by their closest friends and family on 2 May 1976, however, they divorced three years later on 10 April 1979 – it’s believed that Diana filed for divorce because Geoff was cheating on her, and didn’t want to have children.
