Who is Robin Tunney?

American actress Robin Tunney was born in Chicago, Illinois USA, on 19 June 1972, meaning that Gemini’s her zodiac sign. She’s had roles in more than 50 movies and TV series, but is perhaps still known best for playing the lead character Sarah Bailey in the 1996 fantasy horror film “The Craft”, written and directed by Andrew Fleming, and which also starred Fairuza Balk and Neve Campbell. The film follows a girl who’s just enrolled at Catholic preparatory high school, and has joined a trio of girls who practice witchcraft; the film won one of its eight award nominations.

Robin’s still today active in the film industry, and is currently working on multiple untitled projects.

Education and early life

Robin and her siblings Patrick and Susan were raised in Chicago by their mother Cathy who was a bartender, and father Patrick who was a car salesman; Patrick was originally from Ireland, as well as Cathy’s parents. One of Robin’s cousins is American politician and entrepreneur Thomas M. Tunney.

Robin became interested in acting while attending a local high school in Chicago, and appeared in several school and theatre plays as a teenager. She matriculated in 1990 and then enrolled at Chicago Academy for the Arts; it was in the following year that she made her debut TV series appearance, playing Brooke in the episode “But He Loves Me” of the adventure comedy “CBS Schoolbreak Special”.

Robin graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in drama in 1994.

Roles in TV series

The year 1991 also saw Robin play Mary in the episode “Corky’s Travels” of the drama “Life Goes On”, while the year 1993 saw her appear in four TV series, including the comedy “Cutters”, another comedy “Dream On” and the biographical mini-series “J. F. K.: Reckless Youth”; Robin had only one other role in the ‘90s, playing Jill Templeton in the 1994 episode “Mayhem” of the crime mystery “Law & Order”.

In 2005 and 2006, she played Veronica Donovan in 23 episodes of the evergreen crime action “Prison Break”, which starred Wentworth Miller, Amaury Nolasco and Dominic Purcell, and was created by Paul T. Scheuring. It follows a man who’s committed a crime so that he would be sent to the same prison as his brother, as he’s planning to then break them both out; the series won eight of its 40 award nominations.

From 2008 through 2015, Robin starred as Teresa Lisbon in the crime mystery “The Mentalist”, which Bruno Heller created, and which also starred Simon Baker and Tim Kang. It follows a psychic who’s admitted that he’s a fake, and is now helping the police catch a man who murdered his wife and daughter; the series won four of its 20 award nominations.

Robin’s three most recent TV series roles have been in the 2018 episode “Miss Bareback Buckaroo” of the thriller comedy “Insatiable”, 10 episodes of the 2019 crime mystery “The Fix” and four episodes of the 2023 drama “Dear Edward”.

Roles in movies

Robin’s debut film role was playing Sandra Turner in the 1992 crime mystery “Perry Mason: The Case of the Reckless Romeo”, while some of her following roles were in the 1992 comedy “Encino Man”, the 1993 fantasy comedy “Frogs!” and the 1995 musical comedy “Empire Records”. In 1998, she portrayed one of the main characters Kitty in the action crime comedy “Montana”, directed by Jennifer Leitzes, and which also starred Kyra Sedgwick and Stanley Tucci. Robin appeared in only a couple of films in the 2010s, including the 2012 romantic drama “See Girl Run”, the 2015 biographical sports drama “My All-American” and the 2018 mystery thriller “Looking Glass”.

Her most recent film role has been playing Agatha Kaine in the 2020 mystery thriller “Horse Girl”, written and directed by Jeff Baena, and which starred Alison Brie, Molly Shannon and Goldenite. It follows socially awkward woman Sarah who’s begun mixing her lucid dreams with her waking life, and the film won one of its two award nominations.

Robin received special thanks for both the 2000 drama movie “Bread and Roses” and the 2009 short film “The Mentalist: Evidence of a Hit Series”.

She sang the song “Fever” in the 2002 movie “The Secret Lives of Dentists” and the song “Kansas City” in the 2013 episode “Red, White and Blue” of the series “The Mentalist”.

In 2009 and 2010, Robin was in a relationship with famous Australian screenwriter and director Andrew Dominik; they were also engaged, but then chose to break up.

Robin has been engaged to American artist Nicky Marmet since 25 December 2012, and their son Oscar Holly Marmet was born on 23 June 2016; their daughter Colette Kathleen Marmet followed on 8 January 2020.

Robin’s yet to mention other men whom she’s maybe dated, she’s in a long-term relationship with Nicky Marmet as of April 2023, and they have two children together; she had previously been married to Bob Gosse.

Interesting facts and hobbies

Robin’s an avid poker player, and in June 2006 competed in Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown; she made her way onto the final table, and finished second behind Jason Alexander. Robin thus won $200,000, which she donated to The Children’s Health Fund. In August of the same year, she competed in the World Series of Poker.

Robin shaved her head for her role in the 1995 musical comedy movie “Empire Records”, and thus had to wear a wig for the 1996 fantasy horror film “The Craft”.

She was passionate about basketball as a teenager, but had to quit playing the sport after suffering a serious knee injury which required reconstructive surgery.

Robin also holds Irish citizenship through her ancesters.
