Koren Grieveson was born on the 4th November 1971 in Luanda, Angola, and is of South African ancestry.

Her father, a businessman involved in poultry, traveled Africa for business and later to other countries across the world, including Iran, England, Brazil, and the US where they settled in Connecticut when Koren was just ten years old.

Believe it or not, Koren served in the US Army, having joined the force when she was just 17 years old; she was asked why she was interested in the army, Koren said that she was in love with the idea of her driving military jeeps. However, when she became a part of the military, the jeeps were switched to Humvees. Nevertheless, she didn’t regret her decision and served eight years in the military.

Catering and Culinary Institute

Once she was out of the military, she started a catering business and struck a deal with the New York Lollapalooza festival, providing food. She was becoming more successful daily and in no time started catering for such big rock bands as the Rolling Stones and the Eagles. To acquire more knowledge and skills, Koren entered the Culinary Institute of America where she was mentored by Paul Kahan, an award-winning chef. She graduated in 1997, and continued working under Paul Kahan for the next five years as a sous chef at the Blackbird restaurant.

Karen switched from Kahan to Michael Mina, with whom she worked at the San Francisco’s Aqua. However, in 2003 she rejoined forces with Paul Kahan to start the wine bar, Avec. After years of hard work, she was named the Best New Chef by the Food & Wine magazine in 2008, given the award for creating delicious Mediterranean dishes at the restaurant. In 2010 she was named the winner of the James Beard Award, which opened many more doors for her. She became the manager of the Claudette and then in 2015 the manager of Rusto, but served in the position for just six months.

Currently, she is a meat chef at some restaurant in New York, but hasn’t disclosed which one.

Anne W. Burrell was born on the 21st September 1969 in Cazenovia, New York State USA. Before chasing an education in cooking, she went to Canisius College in Buffalo, from which she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and communication in 1991.

After this, she enrolled at the Culinary Institute of America, from which she obtained an Associate in Occupational Studies degree in 1996.

Anne furthered her studies at the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners in Asti, in Italy’s Piedmont region.

Career Beginnings

Anne remained in Italy, perfecting her skills in various restaurants for the next nine months. After this, she returned to the US where she found a job as a sous chef at celebrity chef Lidia Bastianich’s Felidia. Her collaboration with Lidia later helped in her career, but before that she was a chef at Savoy, then rejoined forces with Lidia and with Lidia’s son, Joseph Bastianich, and Ched Mario Batali became the chef of the wine store, Italian Wine Merchants.

She was moving from one restaurant to another, serving as the executive chef of Centro Vinoteca in 2007, but left it in September 2008. After this, her television career took a swing, and she left restaurants until 2017 when she opened her own Phil & Anne’s Good Time Lounge. However, the restaurant closed in April 2018.
