Early life and education

Ed was raised in London mostly by his father who is a businessman, as his parents divorced when he turned three, and his mother moved to live in Spain. His father went on to marry a British woman who gave birth to Ed’s two half-brothers.

Ed became interested in acting while attending high school, and appeared in most of the school’s plays including “Richard III” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, mostly portraying lead characters. He also practiced his screenwriting skills, and by the time he enrolled at Eastbourne College, he had already completed his first play – “Retribution” – which was then performed at the college; the play covers pedophilia, and Ed was praised for his work. He left the college just months before graduation to pursue his acting career.

Appearances in films

He made his debut film appearance in the action adventure film “Eragon” in 2006, which was also his first lead role; the movie follows a farm boy who finds a dragon’s egg and uses the dragon to help him fight an evil king who wants to seize his country. Ed went on to appear in two short films – “Deathless” and “The Ride” in 2010 and 2011 respectively, then he was invited to portray Ed in the movie “A Lonely Place to Die” which was directed by Julian Gilbey. Ed has been nominated for six awards, three of which have been for his performance in the series “Downton Abbey”, winning a share of two for Screen Actors Guild Awards for the Best Ensemble Cast (Television Drama) in 2015 and 2016. Some other award nominations include a BAFTA for the Best British Short Film, and a Saturn for the Best Guest-Starring Performance on a Television Series in 2019.

Love life and relationships

Ed met his future other half Asia Macey while shooting for a TV series in 2012 – Asia was working as a wardrobe director, and they started dating around two months later. They became engaged in 2014 and although there were no signs that the two exchanged wedding vows, some of Ed’s friends referred to the two as a ‘married couple’ while attending a party in December 2014. It was later revealed that they had indeed married in 2014, but kept details of the event hidden.

Asia gave birth to their son sometime in 2015, while their daughter followed in 2018 – they’ve been keeping their children away from the media’s attention.

Asia is only known for working in the costume and wardrobe department on two movies, on the biographical film “The Best of Men” in 2012, which stars George MacKay and Bebe Sanders and follows Dr Ludwig Guttmann who comes to Buckinghamshire shortly before World War II ended, and on the adventure fantasy film “Jack the Giant Slayer” in 2013, which stars Nicholas Hoult and is about a battle between giants and humans.

Hobbies and other interests

Ed has his own favorites when it comes to famous actors and actresses, some of whom are James Dean, Johnny Depp and Julia Roberts, while some of his favorite movies include “East of Eden”, “Rebel Without a Cause”, and the franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean”. He likes to listen to rock music, with his favorite band being The Rolling Stones, and he is a huge fan of soccer, and has been a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur since he was a teenager. He likes tattoos and has two, the one on his right wrist is dedicated to five of his best friends, while his second is on his hip and reads ‘Ramble On’, which is his favorite song originally performed by Led Zeppelin.

He is physically active, having several training sessions at the gym each week while he loves to run and ran his first marathon in London in 2011 doing 26.2 miles (42.1kms) in three hours and 40 minutes. He is a philanthropist, and is currently serving as the Ambassador of YouthNet, a British charity organization.

Ed is fluent in Spanish and French. He is left-handed.

Ed is 41 years old. He has short brown hair and brown eyes, is 5ft 10ins (1.78m) tall, and weighs around 163lbs (74kgs). As of March 2020, his net worth is estimated at $4 million.
