Ava and a boy named Oscar were swimming at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia when a riptide occurred and threatened to drown them – her adoptive father Hugh was there and helped lifeguards save them, as well as several other children.
Hugh and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness, an Australian actress and film producer, then agreed to adopt Ava and Oscar after Deborra suffered two miscarriages – Hugh and Deborra have been married since 11 April 1996.
Ava enjoys spending her free time with her father, and the two could occasionally be seen jogging together. He is an actor, film producer and singer, who has won numerous awards for his performances, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.
