Frank made a name for himself in Harlem in the ’60s and established himself under the guidance of Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson…more or less. When Vietnam broke out, Frank wisely saw it as a great opportunity to cut out the Mafia as middle men in the dope game. Frank went directly to the source in Asia. Soon, Frank’s organization was smuggling heroin directly to the states from the “Golden Triangle” (nickname for an area in southeast Asia booming with opium). Frank’s organization consisted of his brothers and cousins…..and wife. Julianna Farrait-Rodriguez was an actual beauty queen from Puerto Rico. After meeting Frank in a nightclub, the two fell for one another, and quickly wed. Julianna was down with the life Frank chose, and had no qualms about how he kept her laced in the finest attire. She was so down, in fact, she became a contributing member to the organization. The two lavished the finest gifts on one another from jewelry, to furs, to luxury mobiles. Julianna was the one who gave Frank a beautiful, full, chinchilla coat. The gift was so ostentatious that it caught the attention of detectives at a prize fight one night. This led to an investigation being opened that would eventually bring down the whole organization. When the cops raided, Julianna tried to do her part by destroying evidence. She threw a suitcase packed with $585,000 out the window! Later, she plead guilty and was hit with 5 years for her role in the organization. Frank and Julianna separated but rekindled their relationship in the late 90’s, they didn’t live happily ever after though. Back in 2010, at 65, Julianna was knocked in a sting after she sold 2 kilos of raw to an undercover for $60,000. Julianna missed the life she said. Julianna and Frank met in one of Puerto Rican clubs, but there is no information when this happened; the two hit it off immediately and started a romance that lasted until the end of Frank’s life. They were married for more than 40 years and had seven children together, including daughter Francine Lucas-Sinclair and son Frank Lucas Jr. Julianna was involved alongside Frank in the illegal business of drug smuggling, and when all came crumbling down, she was also caught.
Frank was arrested in 1976, and the following year, Frank, Julianna, and their daughter were placed under the witness protection program. Frank Lucas was born on the 9th of September 1930, in La Grange, North Carolina USA, the son of Fred Lucas and his wife Mahalee (nee Jones). He spent his childhood in Greensboro, California, and had a tough childhood, witnessing several disturbing events during his early teenage years.
One such experience was the murder of his 12 year-old cousin by Ku Klux Klan members, killed because his cousin was eyeballing a Caucasian woman in the town they lived in. This changed his perspective on life, and started with petty crimes until he reached New York City, and began working for Bumpy Johnson.
Life as a Criminal
He worked for Johnson until his death, though some of his stories have been discredited, but it was after Bumpy Johnson’s death that Frank took his life into his own hands. At first he just traveled across the US, looking for a way to make it. He realized that the Italian Mafia was holding the monopoly over New York, and that he had to break it somehow.
He visited Bangkok, Thailand, and at Jack’s American Star Bar, a hangout for soldiers, met former US Army sergeant Leslie ‘Ike’ Atkinson, who helped him smuggle drugs into the US, after Frank made connections with Southeast Asia dealers and started trafficking drugs into the USA – some sources state that he used caskets of deceased US Army soldiers. His main import was from Thailand, and it’s been said that his heroin named “Blue Magic” was 98-100% pure.
At the peak of his operations, Frank was making around $1 million on the streets of New York, and at some point, his wealth was around $30 billion.
He and his wife were known to purchase expensive gifts for one another, however, Lucas liked to look more casual and corporate, not wanting to attract much attention to himself.
Arrest, Imprisonment, Death
Frank and Julianna’s house in Teaneck, New Jersey USA was raided in January 1975, and the agents of the US Drug Enforcement Administration and other detectives from the New York Police Department found over $500,000 in cash. He was arrested and sentenced to 70 years in prison. However, he made a plea deal and gave away pieces of evidence that brought more than 100 other drug-related convictions, so that he served only five years, and was released in 1981.
However, just three years later, Frank was back to his old self, and was caught trying to exchange an ounce of heroin and $13,000 for one kilogram of cocaine. This time, his sentence was seven years in prison.
He became a public face in 2007 when he was the subject of the film “American Gangster”, and was portrayed by Denzel Washington. Frank visited the set and provided the director and actor with information and advice about himself and his way of life.
Frank spent the last years of his life in a wheelchair, as he was involved in a car accident that broke his legs. He passed away on the 30th of May 2019 at his home in Cedar Grove, New Jersey.
