She is the eldest of three children born in a wealthy banking family to Eisuke Ono (father) and Isoko Yasuda Ono (mother). She has two siblings namely, Setsuko Ono, and Keisuke Ono. Her father was transferred to San Francisco two weeks before her birth and hence, was able to meet her only when the family shifted to the US in 1935.

The family returned back to Japan in 1937, where she attended Gakushuin School. In 1940, the family relocated to New York City and back to Hanoi the next year, where she attended Keimei Gakuen primary school. She then went to Scarsdale, New York, in 1951 with her family and enrolled in Sarah Lawrence College, but left midway in 1956. She celebrated her 89th birthday in 2022.

  • Yoko Ono found an inexpensive loft in downtown Manhattan at 112 Chambers Street. She then started using the apartment as a studio and living space, also allowing composer La Monte Young to organize concerts in the loft. Both of them held a series of events there from December 1960 through June 1961. 
  • Yoko had her first major public performance in a concert at the 258-seat Carnegie Recital Hall (smaller than the “Main Hall”) in 1961. She is credited for the album cover art for the album Nirvana Symphony by Toshiro Mayuzumi, released by Time Records in 1962. 
  • She performed her first seminal act, “Cut Piece” in Tokyo, which was well-received. She repeated her acts in Manhattan and London, in 1965 and 1966 as well which made her a sensation in the art world.
  • In 1966, she made an artistic ad film “Bottoms” after 365 friends and volunteers agreed to get their naked buttocks photographed, as part of an experiment with performance art.
  • Yoko then met John Lennon at the preview of her art exhibition in London in 1966, with whom she collaborated on several musical and artistic projects.
