US Senator Kyrsten Sinema is the first female elected to the Senate from Arizona and the first openly bisexual to be elected to the House of Representatives and to the Senate. She served as US Representative for the 9th district from 2013 to 2019. She defeated Republican Martha McSally in November 2018 to be elected the senior US Senator from Arizona. Kyrsten Sinema Is The First Woman US Senator From Arizona

Former US Representative for the 9th district Kyrsten Sinema is the first female US Senator to represent Arizona. She announced her candidacy for the Class I United States Senate seat held by the Republican incumbent, Jeff Flake who had declined to seek reelection. Sinema defeated Republican McSally in the election in November 2019.  She was sworn in with the 116th United States Congress on January 3, 2019. She is also the first Democrat elected to represent Arizona in the chamber since Dennis DeConcini (who held her seat from 1977 to 1995).

Kyrsten Sinema Did Not Swear In On The Traditional Bible

Kyrsten Sinema defeated McSally in the November election to become the first female Senator to represent Arizona. She was sworn in on 3 January 2019. However, Sinema decided to be sworn in not on the traditional Bible. She was sworn in on copies of the United States Constitution and the Constitution of Arizona.

Kyrsten Sinema is the first openly bisexual US Senator. She is the second openly LGBT woman to be elected to the Senate. She is also the first openly bisexual and second openly bisexual to be elected to the House of Representatives and to the Senate. She was elected to a seat in the US House of Representatives in 2012 and to US Senate in 2018.

Kyrsten Sinema Is A Marathon Runner

Kyrsten Sinema is a passionate marathon runner. She has completed numerous marathon events. She completed an Ironman Triathlon in little over 15 hours in November 2013, becoming the second active member of Congress after Senator Jeff Merkley to finish a long-distance triathlon. She is also the first Senator to complete an Ironman-branded race. 

Sinema qualified for the Boston marathon in 2019. She set a record for women in Congress when she ran a three-mile race in 20:42. She broke her right foot while running a marathon in 2021 that required her to use a hands-free crutch.

Kyrsten Sinema Summited Mount Kilimanjaro

Kyrsten Sinema reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2013. She summited the highest mountain in Africa on 25 December 2013. It is the highest single free-standing mountain in the world with a height of 5,895 m. It is one of the major and popular climbing destinations in the world.

Kyrsten Sinema Wore Wigs During COVID

Kyrsten Sinema was noted for wearing wigs during the COVID-19 global pandemic. She wore colorful wigs at the time. When asked for a reason, her spokeswoman explained that Sinema wore them to emphasize the importance of social distancing. She did not need to go to a hair salon by wearing wigs.

Kyrsten Sinema Grew Up In Poverty

Kyrsten Sinema grew up in extreme poverty. After her parents’ divorce when she was a child, her mother had custody of the children, Kyrsten and her two siblings. Her mother remarried and the family later moved to DeFuniak Springs, Florida. When her stepfather lost his job and the bank foreclosed on their home, the family lived for three years in an abandoned gas station. They had no toilet or electricity. 

Her great-great-grandfather immigrated to the United States in 1867 from the village of Bitgum, in the Dutch province of Friesland. She was married and divorced her husband, Blake Dain. She does not have any children.

Kyrsten Sinema Worked As A Criminal Defense Lawyer 

Prior to beginning her political career, she worked as a lawyer. She earned a J.D. degree from Arizona State University College of Law in 2004. She then started working as a criminal defense lawyer. She has a B.A. from Brigham Young University, a Master of Social Work degree from Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. in Justice Studies from Arizona State. She also completed the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government program for senior executives in the state. From 1995 to 2002, she worked as a social worker in the Phoenix metropolitan area’s Washington Elementary School District. She was also an adjunct business law professor at Arizona Summit Law School. 

Kyrsten Sinema Started Her Political Career in the Arizona Green Party

Kyrsten Sinema Started Her Political Career in the Arizona Green Party. While in the party, she was its local spokesperson, working to repeal the death penalty and organized antiwar protests, and organized 15 antiwar rallies by the time the Iraq War began. She ran for the Arizona House of Representatives in 2002, as an independent affiliated with the Arizona Green Party and finished in last place in a five-candidate field. 

She joined the Democratic Party in 2004. 

Kyrsten Sinema Denies Being Non-Theist

Kyrsten Sinema has been reported to be non-theist. She was reported to be the only non-theist member of Congress. However, she has denied or rejected such labels.
