Childhood and education
Ian is quite secretive when it comes to his private life, and hasn’t shared any details regarding his siblings and parents, however, it is believed that he was raised on a farm where he learned how to shoot. His father was a collector of rifles, particularly many World War II Japanese weapons.
He grew up spending most of his free time outdoors, while still being focused on his studies as his parents urged him to obtain a college degree. He was physically quite active at high school, as he played basketball and practiced singing and acting with the school’s drama club. Upon matriculation in 2001, Ian enrolled at Purdue University from which he graduated with an Associate’s degree in mechanical engineering technology in 2004.
He has also obtained his computer numerical control (CNC) operator certification from Maricopa Skill Center.
Ian’s career
Not much is known about his career from 2004 to 2010 as he kept away from the spotlight, but Ian worked various jobs before venturing into guns and blogging.
He gained recognition in April 2010, when he joined Schletter, Inc. as their technical sales project manager – he was in charge of solar panel racking systems, and is credited with selling $12 million worth of products in 2011. In September 2011, Ian was promoted to director of inside sale, in charge of a team of project managers, but he left Schletter, Inc. in June 2012.
In June 2010, Ian and several other people created the website Forgotten Weapons, and he has since been serving as its owner and editor. He is in charge of researching and writing about weapons people might not have heard about, as well as about the history of weapons in general.
In 2014, Ian joined InRange Productions LLC as their executive producer and host – the show’s about reviews and field reports on weapons both old and new, and he’s kept this job to this day. He has also been working at Armament Research Services (ARES) since January 2015 as their researcher – the company offers technical expertise and analysis on arms and munitions to both governmental and non-governmental organizations.
In February 2015, Ian joined the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE) as their technical advisor, and has been working for them to this day too, while since February 2019 he’s also been involved with the National Firearms Act Trade & Collectors Association, and is a member of their board of directors.
Ian is also running his and his friends’ YouTube channel “Forgotten Weapons”, which they launched on 9 May 2011, and which is today subscribed to by close to two million people, and numbers around 750 million views of all their videos combined.
The channel’s two most popular videos are “M134 Minigun: The Modern Gatling Gun” – viewed over 8.3 million times since 22 December 2016 – and “World’s Smallest Pistol – 2.7mm Kolibri”, watched over sixmillion times since 28 August 2014.
Love life and wife
Ian is very secretive when it comes to his love life, and nothing about his past and present affairs is known, however, there are many rumors circulating the internet concerning his alleged marriage and sexual orientation.
Many of his fans believe Ian to be a married man, while some have even claimed that he has children, but is trying his best to keep them away from the media’s attention. Pictures to support these claims haven’t been provided, and Ian hasn’t commented on the matter.
Another rumor has it that Ian is gay, which is why he hasn’t talked about any women he has dated, however, this also hasn’t been confirmed.
As of December 2020, Ian seems to be single, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.
Hobbies and other interests
Ian spends most of his spare time researching weapons and reading numerous books about guns – his favorite is “The White Sniper” by Tapio Saarelainen.
He likes to travel, and his job as a weapons’ researcher has taken him all around the US, while Ian has also been to Europe, Asia and Africa on several occasions, with his dream travel destination being Tokyo in Japan – it was his father who helped him become passionate about Asia in general.
Ian is also keen on watching movies a- his favorite actor and actress are Brad Pitt and Natalie Portman, while a couple of his favorite movies are “Mr. and Mrs Smith”, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, and “Meet Joe Black”.
