Throughout her childhood years, she lived in Japan. She is of American nationality and she belongs to a mixed ethnic background of English, Irish, Scottish, German, and Japanese. She attended the Ernest J. King School and she is graduated from Ashland High School. She also received a  B.A. in journalism from the University of Oregon in the year 1978.
