Curtis “C.J.” Harris, a former contestant on “American Idol,” has died. C.J. Harris died on 15th January 2023 (Sunday) at a hospital in Jasper, Alabama, 13 days before his 32nd birthday. He dies at 31. TMZ reported that the suspected cause was a heart attack. His death was confirmed by a family member to TMZ on January 16, 2023. The family member told the publication that the man had apparently suffered a heart attack while in Jasper, Alabama, and had since passed away. A spokesperson for the Walker County Coroner confirms to PEOPLE that Harris died on Sunday after he was rushed to the Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper, Alabama. CPR efforts were unsuccessful. 

The American Idol Instagram account shared a Stories tribute to the late singer on Monday (Jan. 16), writing, “C.J. Harris was an incredible talent, and the news of his passing deeply saddens us. He will be truly missed.”

Fellow “American Idol” Season 13 contestant Jessica Meuse posted a photograph of herself and Harris on Instagram following the news of his death. “I’m completely shocked. Your talent and smile will be missed, and the world is definitely a darker and eerily quieter place without you in it,” she wrote. “I’ll miss your random phone calls asking for life advice and talking about the music world.”
