Early Life and Family

Alexis Antetokounmpo was born on 26 August 2001, in Athens, Greece. Alex along with his older brothers Giannis, Kostas, and Thanasi were raised by their parents Charles and Veronica Antetokounpo, who are Nigerian immigrants, in a poor neighborhood in Sepolia, Athens. His oldest brother, Francis, a professional soccer player, was left with his grandparents when his parents moved from Lagos, Nigeria to Greece in 1991. With no papers, his parents had the most difficult time finding ways to earn money to support the family.

His older brothers did odd jobs to help their parents, and even when Giannis and Thanasi were already playing for a Greek basketball team, they sometimes would miss basketball practices just to be able to sell things on the street to earn money. The Antetokounmpo brothers for many years were stateless, as they didn’t possess any papers –  being born in Greece did not automatically qualify them for a citizenship. Eventually in 2016, he and his brother Kostas became full Greek citizens while their older brothers were given their citizenships a few years earlier. When Giannis became an NBA player, he moved his family to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to live with him.

Education

Alexis had his early education back in Greece, and currently he is studying in Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.

He is about to matriculate in 2020, and is now weighing his University and basketball options.

Basketball Background

Just like his brother Kostas, Alexis is a star player at Dominican High School, and just like his brother Giannis, has great hands with controlling the ball while dominating the paint. He is a shooting guard who has helped his school team to numerous victories. He was recently evaluated by Evan Daniels, Director of Basketball Recruiting at Scout.Com and a USA Basketball Developmental Committee voting member, and said, ‘Antetokounmpo, the brother of Giannis, is impressive physically, and has fine size for the position with wide shoulders and good length.

An impressive athlete, Antetokounmpo moves fluidly and gets off the ground with ease. Antetokounmpo is fairly active on the backboard and projects as a good rebounder. There’s also value in his ability to guard multiple positions. Areas for improvement include his skill, long-range shooting and developing his feel.’

Personal Life

He is the youngest of the five Antetokounmpo brothers, and to whom second oldest brother Giannis devotes so much time to watch, train, and educate even more since their father passed away.

All his four older brothers are playing professionally. Giannis and Thanasis are with Milwaukee Bucks, Kostas is with the L.A. Lakers, and oldest brother Francis is with a local soccer team in Nigeria.

While Alexis regarded Kostas as his best brother and role model, it is Giannis who drives him to be a better version of himself. There is one lesson that he will remember for the rest of his life, and it happened the day his father died from a heart attack. On 29 September 2017, Mariah, Giannis girlfriend, came to pull him out of a class and bring him home. He was surprised that there were other people in their house, and Mariah told him before entering the house to be strong for Giannis.Somebody offered condolences, and eventually, when he found his older brother, Giannis told him, ‘Do you remember what I told you two days ago?’

Apparently, a couple of days before his father died, the family was having a get‑together which Alexis chose not to attend because he had plans with his friends. Giannis reminded him about the importance of family and specifically told him, ‘That’s fine, but I’m just letting you know, we gotta keep being a family because you never know when Mom and Dad’s not gonna be here.’ The pain was so severe that he almost quit basketball, but his brothers told him that their father would want him to succeed, and that is why he kept on pushing to be better. Alexis always knew that even with his failures, his father never once thought of him as just the youngest brother. The Antetokounmpo brothers want to live out their father’s legacy. He currently lives with his mom along with Giannis and Mariah in a modest three-story home compound in Milwaukee.

Who is his brother, Giannis Antetokounmpo?

Giannis was born on 6 December 1994 in Athens, Greece. He played for a local basketball team, Filathlitikos, in Athens along with his brother Thanasis, then in 2013 at the young age of 18, he was drafted into the NBA, selected by the Milwaukee Bucks as the 15th overall pick. Due to his outstanding talent, immense size, and incredible ball-handling proficiency, NBA experts gave him the nickname, “Greek Freak”; he was one of the youngest NBA players in the league. He proved his worth during his rookie year, and was included in the “2013-14 NBA All-Rookie Second Team”, and chosen to play on the “NBA All-Star Weekend in the Rising Stars Challenge.”

The Milwaukee Bucks kept exercising its team option every year to extend his contract, as he kept on improving his numbers. On 19 September 2016, the management offered him a superstar contract, and he inked a $100 million deal extending his contract for another four years. One of his notable games was when he led the Bucks to 108-95 win over the Golden State Warriors, ending its unbeaten streak with almost a triple double. From 2017 to 2020, he was chosen as a starter player for the NBA All-Star Game, and all his hard work paid off by becoming the NBA Most Valuable Player in 2019. In 2020, he is still in contention for getting the same award.

With his longtime girlfriend, Mariah, he has a son named Liam Charles, born February of 2020.
