Herschel Walker is an American former professional football player, bobsledder, sprinter, and mixed martial artist, who is well known as the consecutive 3 times winner of the All-American honors and the winner of the 1982 Heisman Trophy. Herschel was born as one of the seven children in his blue-collar family, to Willis Walker(father) and Christine Walker(mother). His mother taught and inspired him to become confident in his life as he was overweight and had a speech impediment when he was a child and her mother taught him not to make those excuses in life. 

He was raised in Wrightsville along with his 6 siblings where he attended Johnson County High School in Wrightsville. While in high school, he played football, basketball, and competed in track, playing for the Johnson County Trojans high school football team from 1976 to 1979. He was even awarded the first Dial Award as 1979 National High School Scholar-Athlete of the year. With his rush of 3,167, he helped his team to win their first state championship. 

He was a three-time All-American honored player and winner of the college football’s highest honor, 1982 Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award. In 1999, Walker was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame and is considered one of college football’s greatest players. He was the most coveted high school football player in the country before agreeing to attend Georgia. He played a major role in helping Georgia avoid a defeat that year and win the national championship with a victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. 

Later, Walker earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Studies from the University of Georgia.

  • Herschel Walker began his professional career signing with the United States Football League(USFL) New Jersey Generals in 1983. Walker won the USFL rushing title in 1983 and 1985.
  • Walker then was selected in the fifth round to the Dallas Cowboys in the 1985 NFL Draft and was signed in 1986. He moved to the fullback, becoming the second Heisman backfield tandem in NFL history.
