Early life, family, and education

Born Victor Ronald Salva under the zodiac sign of Aries on 29 March 1958, he recently celebrated his 65th birthday. He’s a native of Martinez, California USA, holds American nationality, and his ethnicity is believed to be of mixed White and Latino descent, although he hasn’t confirmed this assumption. His biological father left the family, and Victor was raised in San Francisco, California by his mother and his stepfather, who according to Victor, was abusive and often drunk.

Victor began making movies aged 12, and by the time he matriculated from high school in 1976, he’d written and directed over 20 short movies. To finance his movies, Victor often worked two jobs during the week. He didn’t go to college.

Early career, success, and imprisonment

One of the first commercially successful movies written and directed by Victor was a short horror “Something in the Basement”, which followed the story of a young boy who while waiting for his brother to come back home from war, finds out that something evil is in the basement of their house, claiming that his brother is dead. The lead roles were played by Nathan Forrest Winters and John Downey.

The movie took first place at the American Film Institute video competition, and one of the judges was the great Francis Ford Coppola, who was impressed by Victor’s work. He produced Victor’s 1989 debut feature movie “Clownhouse”, also starring the young actor, Nathan Forrest Winters. The film was nominated for the Fantasporto International Fantasy Film Award for Best Film, and Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize, however, Victor didn’t attend the movie’s premiere because he was imprisoned.

The star of his movies, Nathan Forrest Winters, according to his mother Rebecca, began behaving suspiciously on and off set, so she decided to talk with him about his attachment to Victor, who was a close family friend. Nathan told his mother about ongoing sexual abuse which Victor also videotaped. Victor sexually abused Nathan, forcing him to perform oral sex on him. At the time, Nathan was 12 years old. Victor was arrested, and in his home were found magazines and commercial videotapes containing child pornography.

Victor pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three years in prison, which he served at the California Training Facility in Soledad. As Victor said, there he was beaten by the other prisoners beyond recognition for his crimes against the child, adding that he’d never been more scared or closer to death than during the time he was in prison. Victor spent 19 months in the facility; behind bars, he wrote five scripts.

Later career and most notable works

After being released from prison in late 1992, Victor took an hiatus from his filmmaking career, working as a telemarketer, and writing screenplays during weekends.

In 1995, his movie “The Nature of the Beast” was released, starring Eric Roberts, Brion James and Lance Henriksen, which didn’t gain much success – Victor said that the characters in the movie were based on people he met in prison. Later that year, after being passed from studio to studio as way too strange, his movie “Powder” was distributed by Disney’s Hollywood Pictures.

This fantasy mystery-drama, starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Mary Steenburgen and Lance Henriksen, followed the story of a strange albino boy with special powers, raised by his grandparents who knew about the world only through books, living in the basement of his family’s farmhouse.

The movie received much critical acclaim, and won the Gerardmer Film Festival Audience Award, however, it also caused controversies – Nathan, Victor’s victim, called for the film’s boycott. Victor’s conviction became known to the public, and Disney’s official statement said that they found out about Victor’s crime after the production of the movie had already begun.

In 1999, his next movie entitled “Rites of Passage” was released, which won the Santa Monica Film Festival Moxie! Award for Best Feature. In the following year, the first part of “Jeepers Creepers” was released, and was a breakout hit that set a record for the largest Labor Day box office ever. It was nominated for the Sitges-Catalonian International Film Festival Award for Best Film.

The sequel “Jeepers Creepers 2” was released in 2003, and won the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award for Best Genre Film, and was nominated for the Motion Picture Sound Editors, Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing in a Feature – Music – Feature Film.

The third part, “Jeepers Creepers III” was released in 2017, and it drew controversy for incorporating a character that was a victim of child abuse. Dialogue in the film that offered justification for the abuse was later deleted.

Victor stated in one of his interviews that he’s aware that many perceive him as a pedophile and child molester, but he also expressed regret and apologized to his victim, saying that he’d done everything in his power to pay for his sins. However, many believe that ‘everything’ in this circumstance may not be enough. No matter how talented Victor is, the public believes his actions have been too horrible for most of them to fathom, much less to forgive.

Is he married? Love life and relationships

Victor has never married. When he was 18 years old, his mother and his stepfather disowned him when he came out as gay. As of May 2023, it seems that Victor is single.
