Early life and education
Jerry was raised alongside his three siblings in Brooklyn by their father William Stiller, who was a bus driver, and their mother Bella Citron who was a housewife.
The family moved several times, eventually settling in the Lower East Side, and it was around that time that Jerry became interested in acting. He studied at Seward Park High School, where he was physically active playing football. After matriculation he joined the US Army, and fought in World War II. Upon his return to the US, he enrolled at Syracuse University, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor’s degree in drama and speech.

Jerry started on the stage in “Corialanus” in 1953, but soon became involved in various comedy shows, including with his eventual wife Anee Meara. He made his debut TV series appearance in “Studio One in Hollywood” in 1956 and then went on to appear in single episodes of “The Big Story” in 1957, “Armstrong Circle Theatre” in 1959, and “The Defenders” in 1962.
In 1964, he appeared in “Linus the Lionhearted” and then guest starred as Mr. Landon in two episodes of “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” in 1971. The following years saw him appear in two episodes of “Love, American Style”, four episodes of “The Paul Lynde Show” and 14 episodes of “Joe and Sons”.
The year 1976 saw Jerry act in “Phyllis” and “Rhoda”, and then in an episode of the fantasy drama series “Time Express” in 1979. He portrayed Harian Weatherly in the comedy series “The Love Boat”, appearing in three episodes between 1979 and 1983, while the following years saw him appear in a single episode of numerous series, some of which were “Simon & Simon” in 1982, “Reading Rainbow” in 1983, and “Trapper John, M. D.” in 1984.
Jerry portrayed Brahms in the pilot episode of the crime drama series “The Equalizer” in 1985, followed by his appearances in “Screen Two” in 1986, and 14 episodes of “Tattingers” in 1989. In October 1999, Jerry received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and in 2000 at the Welcome Back to Brooklyn Festival event, Jerry and his wife Anne received the titles ‘King of Brooklyn’ and ‘Queen of Brooklyn’.
Jerry and Anne together got their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on 9 February 2007.
In 1997, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for an Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series (“Seinfeld”), and in 1998 won an American Comedy Award for the Funniest Male Guest Appearance in a TV Series (“Seinfeld”). Jerry made his debut film appearance in the romantic comedy “Lovers and Other Strangers” in 1970 followed by roles in “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three” and “Airport 1975” in 1974. The following years saw him portray Carmine Vespucci in the comedy “The Ritz”, P. R. Priest in the comedy “Nasty Habits”, and Mr. Shoemaker in the romance movie “Those Lips, Those Eyes”. He starred alongside the famous late actor Robin Williams in “Seize the Day” in 1986, and as Raymond Escobar in the comedy “Nadine” in 1987.

He was praised for his performance in the horror comedy movie “Highway to Hell” in 1992, and was then invited to star in “The Pickle” and “Heavyweights” in 1993 and 1995, respectively. Some of his most notable appearances through 2000 were in the independent comedy “Camp Stories” in 1997, “A Fish in the Bathtub” in 1999, and “Secret of the Andes” in 1999.
Jerry started the 2000s by appearing in three comedy movies – “The Independent”, “My 5 Wives”, and “Chump Change” – and he went on to star alongside his son Ben Stiller in the action comedy “Zoolander” in 2001. Love life and wife Anne Meara
Jerry met his wife Anne Meara in 1953 at the office of their agent – they began dating shortly afterwards, and married in 1954 in a private ceremony attended by the two’s closest friends and family. At the time, Anne wasn’t thinking about stand-up comedy, but Jerry suggested that they make-up a duo. They started performing around New York, and by 1961 the two were nicknamed ‘a national phenomenon’ by the magazine “New York Times”. They appeared on TV several times such as in “The Ed Sullivan Show”, and had their own comedy sketch show “Take Five with Stiller and Meara”, which aired in 1977 and ‘78.
They tried starring in their own sitcom “The Stiller and Meara Show” in 1986, but it wasn’t popular.
Jerry and Anne have two children together, one of whom is Benjamin ‘Ben’ Stiller who was born on 30 November 1965, and who is a popular actor best known for starring in movies such as “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, “Zoolander”, and “There’s Something About Mary”. Jerry’s main hobby is writing, and he has published his memoirs “Married to Laughter: A Love Story Featuring Anne Meara” in 2000, while he also wrote the foreword of the book “Festivus: The Holiday for the Rest of Us” by Allan Salken which came out on 26 October 2005.
Jerry has his own favorite actors and actresses, some of whom are Robert De Niro, Marlon Brand, and Angelina Jolie, while some of the movies he enjoys watching the most are the trilogy “The Godfather”, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, and “12 Angry Men”.
