Early life and education

Kim was raised an only child in Jersey City by her father who was a theatre actor, and her mother who was a housewife – Kim and her mother often went to watch Kim’s father perform.

At the age of 12, Kim began studying opera and practicing her acting, and she was eventually awarded a musical scholarship from Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in musical theatre in 1990, and then launched her career as a stage actress when she portrayed Minnie Dove Charles in the play “Flyin’ West”, performed at the Alliance Theatre located in Atlanta in Georgia.
