Early life, siblings and education

Leslie was raised in Los Angeles alongside her siblings Christopher, Michael Jr. and Shawna Leigh Landon, by their father Michael who was an actor, film writer and director, and their mother Marjorie Lynn Noe who was an actress. Leslie also has a half-brother Sean Matthew Landon, and a half-sister Jennifer Landon from her father’s marriage to Cindy Clerico as well as a half-brother Josh Landon from Michael’s other marriage. She has a half-sister Cheryl Lynn Landon from her mother’s first marriage, and also has an adoptive brother Mark Landon.

Leslie became interested in acting while attending high school, as she was a member of the school’s drama club, and appeared in both school and theatre plays. Upon matriculation in 1980, she enrolled at Pepperdine University from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1984, and then obtained her Master of Arts degree in clinical psychology in 1986. Leslie also attended California Graduate Institute, from which she was awarded her Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy.

Career as an actress

Leslie made her debut TV series appearance in 1982, when cast to guest star as Kate Jones in the episode “The Dream Day” of the western family drama “Father Murphy”, which was created by her father and starred Merlin Olsen, Katherine Cannon and Timothy Gibbs – the story follows a man who, with the help of a schoolteacher, provides for over 20 orphaned children. The series won five awards and was nominated for seven others, including a Primetime Emmy.

In 1983, she reprised her role as Etta Plum in the romantic family movie “Little House: Look Back to Yesterday”, which starred Melissa Gilbert, Dean Butler and Richard Bull, and is about a man who wants to become a doctor, and who then discovers that he is terminally ill.

In 1984, Leslie portrayed Etta Plum once again in the drama western movie “Little House: The Last Farewell”, while she also appeared in “Little House: Bless All the Dear Children” in the same year.

Her final role before retiring from acting was in the 1984mystery film “Hollywood’s Most Sensational Mysteries”, in which she portrayed Cheryl Crane.

Leslie is also a writer, as she and her co-writers John W. James, Russell Friedman and Harper Collins released the book “When Children Grieve: For Adults to Help Children Deal with Death, Divorce, Pet Loss, Moving, and Other Losses” in 2001.

In 1991, Leslie appeared in the documentary film about her father entitled “Michael Landon: Memories with Laughter and Love”, and seven years later, she starred in the episode “Melissa Gilbert” of the biographical documentary series “Intimate Portrait”.

In 2001, she was in a single episode of the documentary series “Biography”, while two of her final roles were in one episode of the news talk show “Weekend Today” on 20 May 2007, and the episode “Little House on the Prairie Reunion” of the talk show “Home & Family” in 2015.

Health problems

Not long after she matriculated from high school, Leslie was diagnosed with bulimia nervosa, which is an eating disorder that makes the person eat food until they puke, while they then feel the need to go eating again. Leslie fought the disorder for several years before recovering.

Husband Brian Matthews and children

Leslie met her future husband Brian Matthews sometime in the 1980s, when they were introduced by a mutual friend at a party organized for actors and actresses, and after several years of dating, they married in 1990 in a private ceremony attended by their closest friends and family.

Brian made his debut film appearance in 1981, when he appeared in the slasher “The Burning”, while he is also known for his portrayal of Eric Garrison in the soap opera “The Young and the Restless”.

Leslie and Brian have four children, and have been keeping them away from the media’s attention since they were born.
