Personal life, ex-husband late Dan Markel

Wendi met Daniel Markel in 2004. The couple dated for a couple of years and eventually married in February 2006. At that moment, Dan already held the position of a professor, working at Florida State University School of Law. Wendi and Dan gave birth to their first son in 2009, and in just a year they welcomed another son in 2010. However, Wendi left Dan in 2012, taking the kids and disappearing.

Divorce and fights in the court over custody of the children

When Dan went for another business trip (which he had plenty of) in 2012, he came back to an empty house with almost no furniture, no wife and no kids in it, but with divorce paperwork left on the bed.

For a long time (Dan’s filings claimed the exact period was six weeks) Markel didn’t know where his wife and his kids were located, as Wendi hid the information with the help of members of her family, her mother and brother Charles in particular. The divorce was finalized in July 2013. Wendi and Dan shared joint custody of their children, when Dan filed an order to forbid Wendi to move to Miami with the kids. He won the order at the end of 2013, but the fight in the court didn’t stop. Dan and Wendi still had multiple claims against each other regarding parenting arrangements, finances and disposition of assets. Wendi’s mother also was a figure mentioned in one of Dan’s motions he filed at the beginning of 2014, as he asked the court to provide constant supervision for his mother-in-law while she was with his children, as he claimed she made various ‘disparaging remarks’ about Dan.

Who is Dan Markel?

Dan was very notorious in everything related to courts, as he was a law professor and attorney, working in the Florida State University College of Law. Born on 9 October 1972, in Toronto, Ontario Canada, Dan soon understood what he wanted to do in his life. A Harvard undergraduate, Dan studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and then got his MD from Emmanuel College, Cambridge. In 2001 Dan got his JD from Harvard Law School, quickly becoming one of the highly-demanded attorneys in Florida. In 2009 Dan wrote the book “Privilege or Punish: Criminal Justice and the Challenge of Family Ties”, while he was still working as Professor of Law in Florida State University.

Statements to Dan’s murderers. Were they connected to Wendi and her family?

In July 2015 two different rewards were announced for any information on the suspects. On 26 May 2016 the first suspect named Sigfredo Garcia was arrested in his house in Miami Beach. The police didn’t give the press any details only stating that the case was investigated as a murderer for hire, and they were still searching for the exact person who hired Garcia to murder Dan Markel.

Eventually, a co-conspirator of Garcia was caught, Luis Rivera, who was also seen many times with Garcia. Another suspect arrested during the investigation was Katherine Magbanua. the mother of Sigfredo Garcia’s two children. Katherine and Sigfredo were not in a relationship at the time of the murder, however, Katherine was the person who linked the murderers and the members of Wendi’s family. The police found out that Magbanua dated Wendi’s brother, Charles Adelson. However, the court couldn’t prove Wendi, Charles or their mother, Donna, hired Garcia and Rivera, even though the prosecutors insisted that Charles paid $100,000 for Dan Markel to be murdered, so Wendi could get full custody on her sons. On 15 October 2019 Garcia and Rivera were sentenced to life for the murder and conspiracy.

Katherine Magbanua is still in prison as she was charged as a co-conspirator – her retrial takes place on 13 April 2020. Wendi has denied any involvement in the murder, but has testified – under immunity – that her family may have been.
