Ali MacGraw was born on 1 April 1939, in Pound Ridge, New York State, USA, to a mixed heritage family. Her mother, Frances Klein, was a commercial artist of Jewish descent, while her father, Richard MacGraw, was of Scottish and Irish descent and was a businessman. She had a younger brother, Dick, who tragically died of complications from measles when he was just six years old.

MacGraw grew up in a privileged family, and attended the private boarding school Rosemary Hall in Connecticut, where she was an excellent student and avid athlete. She then attended the women’s liberal arts Wellesley College, in Massachusetts, where she majored in art history.

Modeling Career

Ali MacGraw began her career in the fashion industry as a stylist and photographic assistant with Harper’s Bazaar magazine in the early 1960s.
