Early life and education

Chabelo grew up with two sisters in Guanajuato, where they were raised by their parents who were both working at a local factory. He was interested in singing and learning how to play a variety of instruments during the time he spent at high school, while he was also practicing his comedy hoping to become a stand-up comedian one day. However, he was mostly focused on wrestling and was supposed to represent Mexico in 1952 at the Olympic Games held in Helsinki, Finland but couldn’t find the sponsors to pay for his ‘plane ticket.

Upon matriculation, Chabelo unexpectedly launched his acting career, and didn’t immediately enroll at college, but after gathering enough money, he began studying medicine, although it’s unknown whether or not he obtained his degree.

Career as an actor

Chabelo met two actors Panseco and Gamboa not long after he finished high school – the two actors were already somewhat popular in Mexico, as Panseco was working on the radio and Gamboa was appearing in TV shows. They taught Chabelo all there is to know about the film and TV industry, which led to Chabelo becoming Pepsi Cola’s spokesman in Mexico, and then made it possible for him to travel all around South and North America.

After he was finished with Pepsi Cola, it was hard for him to find a job, as nobody was paying as much as Pepsi, and he eventually began appearing in a show in New York City for a small portion of what he would normally receive from Pepsi Cola. He made appearances in movies “Trip to the Moon”, “Panchito”, and “El Aviso Inoportuno” in 1958, 1962, and 1969, respectively.

On 30 December 1968, Chabelo launched the show “En Familia con Chabelo” – “In Family with Chabelo” – which became the most popular children’s show in Latin America.

Chabelo created the show for children to work with their parents, and play games and compete at several types of funny contests, while he served as the host of the game and acted as if he himself was a little boy called Chabelo. The show was inducted into the Guinness Records book on 30 December 2012, when it reached 44 years of broadcasting on Sunday mornings without a single break. Three years later on 20 December 2015, “In Family with Chabelo” aired its final episode.

Chabelo is considered a celebrity in Mexico, and has guest starred in over thirty movies and TV series, while he has also produced many shows, including “Los Simuladores” and “La Escuelita VIP” among others.

Their third son Juan Gabriel was born in 1976, and now Teresita and Chabelo have four grandchildren.

Teresita Miranda has also ventured in the film industry, and has been working as a second unit director and assistant director for years now – some of the movies she has worked on include “Perdeu-se um Marido” and “Dois Dias no Paraiso” released in 1957 and “O Homem do Dia” released in 1958.
