Amy Aquino McCoy was born in Teaneck, New Jersey USA, on 20 March 1957 – her zodiac sign is Pisces and she holds American nationality. Amy is an actress who is perhaps best known for her portrayal of one of the lead characters – Lieutenant Grace Billets – in the crime drama series “Bosch” which has been airing since 2014, and which also stars Titus Welliver and Jamie Hector. It was created by Eric Ellis Overmyer and the story follows a Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective, who is trying to find the killer of a 13-year old boy, while he is on trial for killing another serial killer – the series has won seven awards and has been nominated for 10 others, including one Primetime Emmy.

Early life and education

Amy was raised an only child in Teaneck by her father Salvatore Aquino who was a gardener, and her mother Adele Mesiti who was a hairdresser.

Amy became interested in acting while attending her junior year at high school, and she was also physically very active as she played volleyball for her school’s team. Upon matriculation in 1975, Amy enrolled at the prestigious Harvard University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology in 1979, however, as she realized that she was more focused on practicing acting than on biology, Amy then enrolled at the Yale School of Drama, from which she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1982.

Roles in movies

Amy has appeared in roughly 90 movies and TV series, and we are going to mention some of her most notable performances in this article.

Amy made her debut film appearance in 1987, when she was cast to portray the supporting character Bonnie in the romantic comedy movie “Moonstruck”. which starred Cher, Nicholas Cage and Olympia Dukakis, and is about a bookkeeper living in Brooklyn who falls in love with her fiancé’s brother – the movie was a huge success, winning 18 awards including three Oscars while it was nominated for 19 others.

In 1988, Amy appeared as Alice Baxter in another romantic comedy – “Working Girl” – which starred Harrison Ford and Melanie Griffith, and in 1990, she portrayed Catherine in the movie “Descending Angel”, but which failed to attract much attention.

The year 1992 saw her portray Ruth Silverman, one of the lead characters in the family drama film “Alan & Naomi”, which also starred Lukas Haas, Vanessa Zaoui and Michael Gross, and is about a young Jewish boy who is helping a young girl become less shy, after she had to watch Nazis kill her father. In 1995, Amy appeared in the comedy movie “Boys on the Side” which starred Whoopi Goldberg and Drew Barrymore, and seven years later, she was praised for her portrayal of Miss Martinez in the critically acclaimed movie “White Oleander”. The year 2004 saw her play Alicia in the popular comedy movie “In Good Company”, which starred some very famous actors such as Dennis Quaid, Topher Grace and Scarlett Johansson, and the following year saw her star alongside Ashton Kutcher in the romantic comedy “A Lot Like Love”.

Three of Amy’s latest roles in movies have been in the suspense thriller “In My Sleep” in 2009, the 2015 supernatural horror “The Lazarus Effect”,  and the romantic comedy “Ctrl Alt Del” in 2017.

Roles in TV series

Amy made her debut TV series appearance in 1991, when she guest starred as Linda Wagner in the episode “Dances with Darlene” of the sitcom “Roseanne”, and in the same year she started portraying the lead character Phyllis Berger Silver in the drama series “Brooklyn Bridge”, also starring Marion Ross, Danny Gerard and Louis Zorich, and which is about a 14-year old boy Alan Silver and his family – the series won 13 awards including a Golden Globe, and was nominated for 26 others.

In 1995 she was invited to play the supporting character Sasha Danziger in the sitcom “Madman of the People”, and Amy then portrayed Dr. Joanna ‘Joey’ Diamond in the family drama “Picket Fences” and was for her performance awarded a Quality Television Award for Best Recurring Player. Together with her fellow actors and actresses, she was also nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. In 1996, she started portraying the supporting character Dr. Janet Coburn in the critically acclaimed medical drama “ER”, and the following years saw her appear in an episode or two of several series, such as the sitcom “The Larry Sanders Show”, another sitcom “Becker”, and the teen comedy “Freaks and Geeks”.

The year 2000 saw her portray Dr. Toni Pavone in ten episodes of the drama “Felicity”, and then play a supporting role as Detective Lois Carver in the crime drama “Crossing Jordan” in 2001. Amy was invited to guest star in the popular comedy series “Curb Your Enthusiasm” in 2002, as well as in another popular comedy “Everybody Loves Raymond” in 2003. The following years saw her appear in single episodes of several series such as the soap opera mystery comedy “Desperate Housewives” in 2007, the comedy detective mystery series “Monk” in 2009, and the crime comedy “Castle” in 2010.

Three of Amy’s more recent roles in TV series have been in the musical comedy “Glee” in which she played The Funny Girl Producer in two episodes in 2013, the Canadian supernatural horror comedy “Being Human” in which she portrayed Donna Gilchrist in nine episodes in 2014, and the web comedy series “Grace and Frankie” in which she guest starred as Dana Marino in a single episode in 2020.

Love life and husband

Amy met her future other half Drew McCoy, a film producer (produced only one film – the short “The Confessional” in 2009) and financial advisor in 1992, when Amy was in a café with her best friend, while Drew was passing – Amy’s friend knew Drew and she introduced the two.

They married on 27 May 1995 after three years of dating, in a private ceremony attended by only a couple of their closest friends and family, and it appears as Amy and Drew have agreed not to have children but to focus on their careers. Amy hasn’t talked about any other men she might have dated before she met Drew.

The two are interested in renovating houses, and are today living in Hollywood in a 1915 Pagoda-style bungalow which they restored themselves.

As of September 2020, Amy is married to Drew McCoy and they don’t have children.

Hobbies and other interests

Amy’s main hobby has been gardening ever since she was seven years old – she used to spend hours and hours with her father in his garden, while he taught her about plants and how to maintain them.

Amy is an activist who has been the officer of Screen Actors Guild (SAG) for over 20 years, and helped merge SAG with American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) while she was then selected to become the co-secretary treasurer of SAG-AFTRA – Amy has also helped protect the Sunset Square neighborhood, and has become the mayor of historical Preservation Overlay Zone Board.

In her spare time and mostly late at night, Amy likes to watch movies and TV series, and some of her favorite actors and actresses are Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep, and some of her favorite movies are “Taxi Driver”, the trilogy “The Godfather” and “Kramer vs. Kramer”.
