Who is Sofia Black-D’Elia?

American actress Sofia Black-D’Elia was born in Clifton, New Jersey USA, on 24 December 1991, making Capricorn her zodiac sign. She’s had roles in 21 TV series and movies, and is probably known best for starring as Samantha Fink in all 20 episodes of the comedy series “Single Drunk Female”, which Simone Finch created, and which also stars Sasha Compere and Lily Mae Harrington. It follows Samantha Fink who’s a bit of an alcoholic, and has been forced to live with her mother and stay away from alcohol to avoid jail time; the series has been airing since 2022.

Education and early life

Sofia was raised in Clifton alongside her older brother Kyle, by their father Anthony V. D’Elia who’s a Superior Court Judge in New Jersey, and mother Elinor who’s working in printing; not a lot else has been disclosed about Sofia’s parents and brother, because she respects their privacy.

She studied at Clifton High School and during her time there became passionate about acting, appearing in various plays performed at the school; she was also passionate about dancing during her teenage years, and was five when she began taking both dancing and acting lessons.

Sofia matriculated in 2010, and then began pursuing an acting career rather than enroll at college.

Roles in TV series

Sofia’s debut TV series role was playing Bailey Wells in 29 episodes (2009-2010) of the long-running romantic mystery “All My Children”, which starred Susan Lucci, Michael E. Knight and David Canary, and was created by Agnes Nixon. The soap opera aired from 1970 through 2011, follows the lives of Erica Kane and her many husbands, and won 192 of its 767 award nominations.

Sofia became popular in 2011, when cast to play Tea Marvelli, one of the main characters in all 10 episodes of the comedy “Skins”, which Bryan Elsley and James Brittain created, and which also starred Danny Flaherty and Ron Mustafa; it follows the lives of four teenagers attending their final year of high school – the series was nominated for two awards.

In 2012, Sofia played Sage Spence in nine episodes of the romantic drama “Gossip Girl”, and the following year saw her play Jules Whitman in four episodes of the drama “Betrayal”. In 2015, she portrayed Erin Calder in all the 13 episodes of the popular fantasy mystery “The Messengers”, created by Eoghan O’Donnell, and which starred Shantel VanSanten, Diogo Morgado and JD Pardo. It follows a group of people who’ve died from an energy pulse emitted by a mysterious object that has crashed on Earth, but who’ve now been brought back to life; it drew a nomination for an Imagen Foundation Award for Best Actor – Television, for Diogo Morgado.

Sofia’s had only three other TV series roles: she played Tatiana Ashland in six episodes of the 2016 science fiction thriller “Invisible”, the lead character Sabrina Pemberton in all the 37 episodes of the 2018 comedy “The Mick”, and six episodes of the 2021 crime thriller “Your Honor”.

Roles in movies

Sofia’s debut film role was playing Erika in the 2012 short drama “Somewhere Road”, and the following year saw her play Not Magda in the romantic drama “The Immigrant”, written and directed by James Gray, and which starred Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner. Set in 1921, the film follows a magician who’s trying to rescue an immigrant woman from the life of vaudeville and burlesque, and it won 15 of its 44 award nominations.

A couple of Sofia’s following roles were in the 2014 action thriller “Born of War”, the 2015 mystery science fiction “Project Almanac” and the 2016 short musical “10 Crosby”.

Also in 2016, she portrayed Tirzah Ben-Hur in the popular romantic action “Ben-Hur”, which Timur Bekmambertov directed, and which starred Rodrigo Santoro, Toby Kebbell and Jack Huston. It follows the life of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur who was falsely accused of treason, and the movie won two of its five award nominations.

Sofia’s only other film roles have been in the 2016 action adventure “The Promise”, the 2020 short comedy “Margo & Perry”, and the 2021 romantic comedy “To All the Boys: Always and Forever”.

Other credits

Sofia received special thanks for the 2016 action crime adventure movie “Nerve”, the 2017 short drama film “Elle Fanning’s Fan Fantasy”, and the 2020 action crime science fiction movie “Project Power”.

Some of her most recent talk-show appearances have been in “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, “In Creative Company”, and “Good Morning America”.

Love life and marriage

Even though Sofia prefers to keep her love life away from media, it’s still widely known that the popular actress is today married. She and American moviemaker Henry Joost exchanged vows in a private ceremony on 9 October 2021, attended by only the closest of their family members and friends. Henry’s written six, produced 13 and directed 21 TV series and movies, while he’s probably still known best for directing the 2011 horror mystery film “Paranormal Activity 3”, the 2016 action crime adventure movie “Nerve”, and the 2020 action crime science fiction film “Project Power”.

Sofia and Henry don’t have children together, and this is widely believed to be because they’re both currently focused on their careers.

Sofia’s yet to mention other men whom she’s maybe been with, she’s married to Henry Joost as of April 2023, and doesn’t have children.
