Jessica Brown Findlay is an English TV and film actress, who is known best for her appearances in the historical drama series “Downton Abbey”, and the comedy-drama film “Albatross.”

Age, Early Life, and Education Background

Jessica Rose Brown Findlay hails from Cookham, Berkshire, England, and was born under the Virgo zodiac sign on 14 September 1989, which makes her 34 years old as of 2023. She’s the daughter of Financial Advisor Christopher Findlay, and the Education Assistant Beverley Findlay. During a 2012 interview with Vanity Fair, Findlay revealed that she fell in love with ballet when she was growing up, adding that acting was the element of ballet she loved the most.

Jessica began training in ballet at the age of three, ultimately with The Royal Ballet School and the National Youth Ballet. When she was 15 years old, she was invited to dance at the Royal Opera House (ROH). For her secondary education, Findlay went to Furze Platt Senior School, located in Maidenhead, Berkshire, then after she completed her General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), she enrolled at the Arts Educational School, best known as ArtsEd, for two years – unfortunately, her ballet dreams were cut short during her final year when she suffered ankle complications and was forced to undergo three operations, one of which was unsuccessful. Consequently, Jessica took acting classes at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts and Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design.

In 2011, Findlay starred alongside Julia Ormond and Sebastian Koch in the British drama “Albatross.” In 2014, she starred as Karen Lowenstein in the American drama film “Lullaby” sharing the screen with Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins and Garrett Hedlund. She later starred as Bella Brown in the British romantic drama “This Beautiful Fantastic” in 2016, Fay (voice) in the computer-animated comedy “Monster Family” in 2017, and Marianne in the horror movie “The Banishing” in 2020. 2021 saw Jessica reprise her role of Fay in “Monster Family 2” and most recently in 2022, she played Lea in the Francesco Carrozzini-directed Italian-British thriller movie “The Hanging Sun,” which was adapted from Jo Nesbø’s 2015 novel “Midnight Sun.”

In 2015, Jessica was cast as Electra in the play “Oresteia,” which was performed at Almeida Theater and Trafalgar Studios. In the year that followed, she appeared in the play “Uncle Vanya,” and subsequently played Ophelia in William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet.”

TV Appearances

Findlay made her TV debut as Rachel in the British sci-fi comedy-drama show “Misfits” in 2009. In 2010, she was cast as Lady Sybil Crawley in the British historical drama series “Downton Abbey”, appearing in 20 episodes of the show until 2012. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Jessica said that she found the character of Sybil fascinating, and loved her ‘modern attitude to life.’ In 2012 and 2014, Jessica appeared in a few episodes of the miniseries’ “Labyrinth” and “Jamaica Inn.” Her next notable TV appearance was in the British-American drama “Harlots”, in the first, second and third seasons of the show from 2017 to 2019, starring alongside Samantha Morton, Lesley Manville and Eloise Smyth.

In 2020 and 2021, Findlay voiced Lenore in the third and fourth seasons of the American adult animated horror series “Castlevania,” which aired on Netflix. 2020 also saw her star as Lenina Crowne in the short-lived Peacock sci-fi drama “Brave New World”, and in 2022, she portrayed Izzie Todd in three episodes of the BBC Two TV series “Life After Life.” In the same year, she landed the main role of Tiffany ‘Tiffy’ Moore in the Paramount comedy-drama “The Flatshare,” which is based on the 2019 eponymous novel by Beth O’Leary.

The British film magazine, Screen International, has compared Findlay to the English Academy Award-nominated actress, Keira Knightley OBE, and Vanity Fair Magazine previously wrote that she is ‘a new talent to watch.’

Since 2012, Jessica has served as the brand ambassador for the jewelry line Dominic Jones, which is based in England.

In 2013, Jessica together with the cast of the series “Downton Abbey” won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. For her performance in the movie “Albatross,” Findlay was nominated for a British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer in 2011, and an Evening Standard British Film Award in the same category in 2012.

Personal Life

Jessica is a married woman. She walked the aisle with her “Harlots” co-star, Ziggy Heath on 12 September 2020. Heath is also known for his appearances in the TV series “I Am…” and “The Miniaturist”, and the film “How to Build a Girl.” On Women’s Day 2022, Findlay revealed that they were struggling to have a baby – she shared her video taking hormone injections on social media, and captioned it ‘IVF has made me even more aware of just how much women are capable of, and what we can achieve whilst going through pain and heartbreak. Your body isn’t the enemy. Love it. No matter what.’

In September 2022, Jessica disclosed on her social media accounts that she was expecting a baby, and on 5 November 2022 the couple welcomed twins – Findlay shared a selfie on Instagram holding the newborn boys against her chest. She hasn’t yet revealed their names.

Between 2010 and 2012, Findlay was in a romantic relationship with British artist Thomas Campbell. The duo met at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design.
