Who is Matthew Goode?

British actor Matthew William Goode was born in Exeter, Devon, England, on 3 April 1978, making Aries his zodiac sign. He’s appeared in over 50 TV series and movies, and is perhaps known best for starring as Charles Stoker in the 2013 thriller movie “Stoker”, which Park Chan-wook directed, and which also starred Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska. It follows India whose father’s died, while her mysterious uncle Charlie has now come to live with her and her mother; the movie won seven of its 49 award nominations.

Education and early life

Matthew was raised in Exeter alongside his brother and three half-siblings, by their mother Jennifer who’s a theatre director and nurse, and father Anthony who was a geologist.

Matthew studied at Exeter School and was mostly into sports during his time there, as he played soccer for the school’s team, and also enjoyed playing basketball and tennis. He matriculated in 1996 and then enrolled at the University of Birmingham, but eventually transferred to Weber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2000.

Roles in TV series

Matthew’s debut TV series role was playing Casper in the 2002 episode “Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister” of the adventure comedy “The Wonderful World of Disney”, and the following years saw him appear in an episode of the crime drama “The Inspector Lynley Mysteries”, the drama mini-series “He Knew He Was Right” and the crime mystery “Marple”.

His following role came in 2012, when cast to star as Captain Gray in both episodes of the romantic war mini-series “Birdsong”, which also starred Eddie Redmayne and Clemence Poesy, and follows a British soldier who’s fighting in the World War One trenches of northern France; the mini-series won two of its 11 award nominations. Also in 2012, Matthew starred as Rex Clarke in both episodes of the drama mini-series “The Poison Tree”.

The year 2013 saw him play the lead character Stanley in all the six episodes of the drama mini-series “Dancing on the Edge”, which also starred Chiwetel Ejiofor and Joanna Vanderham, and follows a black Jazz band which has become popular in the 1930s London; the mini-series won five of its 21 award nominations. Some of Matthew’s following notable performances were starring as George Wickham in the 2013 romantic mystery mini-series “Death Comes to Pemberley”, portraying Finn Polmar in 28 episodes of the crime mystery “The Good Wife” in 2014 and 2015, and playing Henry Talbot in seven episodes of the romantic drama “Downton Abbey”, also in 2014 and 2015.

One of Matthew’s most recent TV series roles has been playing the lead character Matthew Clairmont in the romantic fantasy “A Discovery of Witches”, which also starred Teresa Palmer and Alex Kingston, and follows historian and witch Diana Bishop who’s being helped by vampire Matthew Clairmont to solve the mysteries of Ashmole 782; the series aired from 2018 through 2022 and won two of its 12 award nominations.

Roles in movies

Matthew’s debut film role was voicing various characters in the 2003 animated action comedy “Bounty Hamster”, while he became popular after being cast to play Ben Calder in the critically acclaimed 2004 romantic comedy “Chasing Liberty”, directed by Andy Cadiff, and which also starred Mandy Moore and Mark Harmon. It follows US President’s daughter Anna who’s eluded her bodyguards in Prague, Czech Republic and is now travelling around Europe with her boyfriend Ben; the movie was nominated for five awards.

Some of Matthew’s roles in the remainder of the decade were in the 2005 romantic comedy “Imagine Me & You”, the 2007 crime thriller “The Lookout”, and the 2009 romantic crime drama “A Single Man”.

The year 2013 saw him star as Captain Sir John Lindsay in the biographical romantic drama “Belle”, directed by Amma Asante, and which also starred Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Emily Watson. It follows Royal Navy Captain Sir John Lindsay’s bi-racial daughter Dido Elizabeth Belle as she’s being raised by her great-uncle Lord William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, and the movie won 13 of its 45 award nominations.

Matthew’s also known for playing Hugh Alexander, one of the main characters in the hit 2014 biographical thriller “The Imitation Game”, which Morten Tyldum directed, and which also starred Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch. It follows Alan Turing as he’s trying to crack the German Enigma code during World War II, and the movie won 49 of its 214 award nominations, including an Oscar win for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay.

Matthew’s three most recent movie roles have been in the 2021 action adventure thriller “The King’s Man”, the 2022 animated comedy “The House” (voice role) and the 2022 historical action “Medieval”; he’s currently shooting for the upcoming movie “Freud’s Last Session”.

Some of the TV specials in which Matthew’s appeared include the 2012 “MSN Exclusives”, the 2015 “The EE British Academy Film Awards” and the 2020 “Official Secrets: Cast and Crew Interviews”.

Love life and wife

Matthew prefers to keep his personal matters to himself, and not a lot has been shared about his wife and children. It’s known that he and British non-celebrity Sophie Dymoke exchanged vows in a private ceremony in 2007, attended by no more than 150 of their closest friends and family members; Sophie prefers to stay away from media, and not even her profession has been disclosed. She gave birth to their daughter Matilda Eve on 1 March 2009, second daughter Teddie Eleanor Rose followed in September 2013, and son Ralph was born in August 2015.

Matthew’s yet to speak about other women whom he’s been with, he’s married to Sophie Dymoke as of April 2023, and they have three children together.

One of Matthew’s best friends is popular British actor Laurence Fox, while he’s also good friends with actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Ben Whishaw.

His half-sister Sally Jennifer Meen’s a popular British TV presenter.

“The Sunday Times Magazine” featured Matthew on their list ‘Britain’s Finest Rising Stars’, while some of the other actors who’ve been featured on the list are Eddie Redmayne, Hugh Dancy and Romola Garai.

One of his favorite movies is the 1978 biographical documentary “The Last Waltz”; Matthew’s favorite actor is Benedict Cumberbatch, and some of the other movies which he likes to watch often include “Penguins of Madagascar”, “1917” and “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”.
